Chapter 8

Hastings~

Not sure what I was thinking, but I hadn’t expected Saxton Voss to still be at the condo when I came back from the fake errand that I had created to give him and Kincaid some privacy.

However, there he was.

All six-foot-two of him with his black hair, grey eyes, perfect face, broad shoulders, tapered waist, six-pack abs, v-indented hips, and muscular legs.

He was just sitting in my living room, Kincaid curled up on one end of the couch, Saxton sitting casually next to her.

I’ve always known who Saxton Voss was; it was hard not to. Like most wealthy families, tabloids and news outlets were ravenous when it came to their lives. The Vosses had been no different from all the other rich families that ran this country. Their accomplishments were always in the news, and so was their philanthropy. While none of it had been negative, they’d still been news.

Saxton’s father owned damn near every media outlet in existence, and his mother was a corporate attorney, raking in millions by bailing companies out of one scandal or the other. Of course, her notoriety was always cast in the most positive light because…thun, thun, thun…her husband owned damn near every media outlet out there.

Being the only son to the Voss fortune and empire, Saxton’s life has been followed closely for years. He was always being photographed, and the fact that Hales was a private university was the only reason paparazzi weren’t camped out everywhere. With the likes of Saxton Voss, Ross Carmichael, Stone Lexington, August Remington, Drummond Markle, Fox Harrington, and Kincaid Black attending here, it’d be hard for the press to stay away. The temptation to catch them in the act of something sordid would be too much for them.

However, if the press loved Saxton Voss and his good looks, they were practically gluttonous for his sisters. Carissa and Courtney Voss were twins, eighteen-years-old, and beautiful. While I had platinum blonde hair, they both had that stunning golden blonde that men drooled over. They had taken after their mother while Saxton had taken after his father, but that wasn’t the only difference between the siblings. Where Saxton appeared years more mature for his age, the twins appeared rather juvenile and superficial. Of course, I didn’t know any of them well, but that’s what’s been displayed in the press over the years.

Still, the first time that I ever met Saxton Voss, I had almost swallowed my tongue. Sure, I’d seen him around campus, but never up-close and personal like. I had admired him from afar like most the girls at Hales. Even though my family came from money, and I wasn’t a complete slouch in the looks department, even I knew that Saxton Voss was out of my league. Only the very confident and brave attempted to tackle that mountain, and it wasn’t that I lacked confidence, but I definitely didn’t possess enough bravery to make a move on the guy.

So, when I had become friends with Kincaid, and she had introduced me to Saxton for the first time, it had taken every ounce of sense in my brain not to make a fool of myself. He had been polite, kind, and had even shaken my hand upon our introduction. I, on the other hand, had just smiled like a fool as Kincaid had explained that Saxton was her friend.

Over the years, I’ve overcome the tongue-tied feature of my idiocy, but I still had to work on not letting his mere presence flutter me completely. While I wasn’t a timid flower, there was just something about Saxton Voss that made me stupid. The very first time that I ever joined them for a beach trip, seeing Saxton Voss in nothing but board shorts had short-circuited everything inside my brain. To this day, it had been the worst trip of my life. Especially, considering how it had been a group outing, and there hadn’t been a shortage of girls desperately trying to get his attention. I’ve had a thing for this guy ever since Kincaid had introduced us, and it was rather sad.

The dude didn’t even know I existed.

“Hey, am I interrupting?” I asked as I shut the door behind me.

Saxton looked up and smiled at me. “Nah,” he answered. “Besides, you live here.”

I threw back a quick grin, then focused my attention on Kincaid. “Hope you’re not upset that I texted him?” I posed it like a question.

Kincaid turned her head to look back at me. “You texted him?”

I shrugged. “I was still kind of worried,” I admitted. “The fact that you let me drag you shopping was more worrisome had you told me to leave you alone.”

Kincaid let out a lyrical laugh. “I guess you know me better than I gave you credit for.”

I smiled. “I knew that you were humoring more than it would actually make you feel better to go shopping, so I texted Saxton and kind of told on you.”

Kincaid looked over at Saxton and her smile reached her eyes. “He scolded me properly,” she joked. “All is well now.”

“Good,” I replied, still avoiding having to look at Saxton. “Since that’s all settled, I’ll let you guys do your thing.”

“You don’t have to hide in your room on my account,” Saxton said, and my body clench with embarrassment and something else.

I glanced at him super quick before pretending to look inside my shopping bag. While I had lied about having to run an important errand, I had made the most of my time and had restocked on my Channel perfume. “Thanks, but there’s a lot that goes into getting ready for one of Drummond Markle’s parties,” I replied absently. “So, I better start now.” Done fiddling with my bag, I looked back at Kincaid. “You’re still going, right?”

She nodded. “Sure am.”

“Oh, okay. Good.” Smiling again, I made myself scarce. “Okay, well…off I go.” Looking back at Saxton again, I added, “Have fun.” His brows jumped in confusion, but I didn’t stick around to explain that very odd comment.

Once I made it to my room, I locked the door, and if I could have done it without making a ton of noise, I would have moved my dresser in front of the door. I was flustered, embarrassed, and turned on. It was the man’s eyes. They were an icy grey, and every time he looked at me, I felt like I was naked, and not just my body. I could swear that Saxton Voss could see everything that I was thinking and feeling in my eyes. It was very disconcerting.

Syncing my phone to my speaking, I turned the music loud enough to drown out any noise on my end, but not loud enough to be disturbing to Kincaid and Saxton. Even if the seriousness was no longer there, they were still talking and spending time together.

Opening the drawer to my nightstand, I pulled out my handy, dandy, trusted vibrator wand, and crawled into bed. I needed to take the edge off if I didn’t want to jump the first guy that I saw tonight at the party. While I had nothing against one-night stands, I still had enough sense to be selective. Whoever I ended up with tonight, I wanted to make sure there was some chemistry, and I wasn’t just horny as hell.
