“Because I’m not a fucking coward,” I snapped back.

“That’s debatable,” he sneered, and fire lit hot in my veins.

“You have a whole hell of a lot of nerve to insult me in my own home,” I growled. “I don’t know who the hell you think you are, but I’d watch my step if I were you.”

Fox was on me before I could grasp what the lunatic was about. With my back plastered against the wall, he had me caged in between in arms. “Or else what?” he taunted. “At this point, what more could you possibly do to me, Black?”

That just showed how naïve he was when it came to what I was capable of. My conscience was optional most of the time. I could be ugly if I rationalized it reasonably enough. That was my most toxic trait. While I had a lot of them, that one was the scariest. I could hurt the people that I loved if I thought it served the bigger picture.

However, instead of showing him just how vicious I really could be, I asked, “Is this the truce you were talking about, Harrington?”

After a few tense seconds, Fox pushed off the wall, giving me some space. “Obviously, this isn’t going to work,” he finally said. “As long as the girls are safe, there’s really nothing left for me to do until it’s time to put August down.”

“As long as the girls are safe,” I echoed, hurt and hating myself for feeling that way. I had no right to feel anything.

Fox’s hazel gaze raked me up and down. When those multi-colored orbs met my black ones, he said, “We both know that the last thing you need or want is a man who gives a fuck about you, so yeah. As long as Hastings, Sutton, and Rylee are safe, I’m not really needed here.”

He was wrong.

Still, I couldn’t tell him that.

“I’ll make you a deal,” I offered. “I’ll stay away unless Saxton thinks otherwise. I’ll let him make the call.”

“Okay-”

“But no more bullshit like that night at Drummond’s,” I added quickly.

Fox made his way back towards my front door. With his hand on the knob, he said, “Trust me when I tell you that I’m not one to repeat mistakes, Black. That night had been nothing but a lapse in judgement.” He opened the door, and with one final look my way, added, “Again.”

Fox left, and as soon as the door shut behind him, my legs gave out and I slid to the floor. He’d essentially just told me to go fuck myself, but I clearly heard him lock the door behind him, making sure that I was safe, even if he didn’t want to.

I let out a deep breath, then did what I always did when I felt edgy. I called Saxton, hoping that I wasn’t interrupting him and Hastings. She was still healing, and that should be his priority right now.

“Babe?”

“He just left.” I didn’t have to explain who I was referring to. Saxton knew everything about me.

“I’ll be right over-”

“No,” I quickly replied. “Just…stay on the phone with me a while?”

“Of course,” he whispered like I knew he would.

Two hours later, I finally let him get off the phone.
