Chapter 6

Fox~

The sex wasn’t working.

At all.

While I still couldn’t get enough of Kincaid, my anger wasn’t subsiding. My anger, my resentment, my regret, my insecurities, my anxiety…it was all still there, all bubbling in a cauldron, ready to boil over and wreak havoc on everything around me.

We’ve been using sex as a bandage, refusing to pull it off to see how badly the wound underneath had festered. Too afraid to check if there was a possibility of it healing or if it had gotten so bad that it was time to amputate.

However, instead of working our shit out at home, we were all convened at some abandoned cabin that was located nearly an hour’s drive from Serenity Springs. We’ve never been called out this far before, but considering what we were going to discuss, it made sense. I also knew that with Sutton and Hastings having been summoned along with the rest of us, Alexander wasn’t playing anymore.

We were all lined up in a semi-circle, Stone, Rylee, Saxton, Hastings, Ross, Sutton, me, then Kincaid, facing Alexander, Donovan, and Jacob. As always, Donovan and Jacob were standing in the background, letting Alexander run the show.

Standing in front of Kincaid, Alexander got straight to the point. “Did you kill him on purpose, Ms. Black?”

Kincaid just cocked her head a bit, arching a brow. “And if I did?”

“Do not play with me, Ms. Black,” Alexander hissed. “You may have thwarted the authorities, but you’re not dealing with the SSPD any longer. You are dealing with The Order.”

“Oh, you mean the organization who didn’t do fuck all about August Remington’s sick fascination with Rylee? Who didn’t do anything about how he had accosted Sutton? Who didn’t do a goddamn thing about his attack on Hastings? That organization?” she spat. “Is that the organization that you’re subtly trying to intimidate me with?” Kincaid straightened her back before daring him to show her what he was capable of. “Do your fucking worst.”

Alexander looked over at me. “Is this your doing?”

My brows jumped as my head reared back a bit. “Me? What the fuck do I have to do with it?”

“I read the police reports,” he replied before looking down the line at all of us. “Did you all have a hand in killing him and Ms. Black is just covering for you all?”

“Look at her face, Alexander,” I bit out. “He attacked her. The proof is all over her body.” I crossed my arms over my chest. “Unless you’re going to accuse one of us of hitting her, is that it?”

“Am I supposed to believe that it was just a coincidence?” he scoffed. “That none of this has anything to do with the complaints you lodged against him?”

“It has everything to do with the complaints,” Kincaid snapped. “Had he not been a sick fuck, he might still be alive.” She arched a perfectly groomed brow. “In fact, it can even be argued that it’s your fault August is dead. Had you had put a leash on him after that outburst during initiation night, then maybe he wouldn’t have thought he could just do whatever the fuck he wanted. Ever think about that?”

“That’s enough, Ms. Black.”

This crazy girl stepped to him. “No, I don’t think it is,” she shot back. “And if I were you, I’d ask myself one very important question, Alexander.”

The fool straightened his back. “And what question is that?”

“When it all gets down to the brass tacks, who is The Order going to believe? You or a Lexington, Voss, Carmichael, Harrington, and Black all reciting the same story?” Kincaid leaned back and looked him up and down like he was nothing but an insect that needed to be squashed beneath her shoes. “While you might matter and have earned your Order stripes, you aren’t more powerful than this caliber of this class. Do you honestly think that The Order is going to trade Fox, Saxton, Ross, and Stone for you? Especially, when Saxton comes with Hastings Martin?” And because Kincaid wasn’t done, she peeked around Alexander to address Donovan and Jacob. “And what about you two? Do you really think you have what it takes to compete with the star power that these four bring to the table?”

“Baby-”

The girl whirled around to face me, and she was nowhere near done. “What? Quit pointing out the obvious? Quit playing with their delicate egos? What, Fox?” Kincaid’s eyes were on fire, and it took me back a little. Kincaid was hostile as fuck, and I had no idea why. “Quit with the kid gloves?”

“No,” I drawled out slowly, doing my best to soothe the beast that was raging inside her. “I think they know exactly how the chips will fall if they do.”

“Then what?” she bit out. “Because if you think that I’m going to stand back and let Alexander George-or anyone for that matter-threaten me, then you are wrong.”

I reached out and cradled her jaw with my hand, my thumb playing with her bottom lip. “I was just going to agree with you, Kincaid,” I told her. “I was just going to say that I think they got the picture.”

Her entire face softened, her fire dimming to a low simmer. “If he had taken care of August like he was supposed to have had, then I never would have had to kill him to save myself. This is just as much his fault as it is August’s, and I am not going to stand here and let him try to pin this on me.”

“None of us are going to let that happen,” I assured her.

“I think that’s enough,” Stone announced, stepping forward. “We’re done answering to you, Alexander.”
