“I bet,” Ross grumbled.

“Okay, well with August dead now, and no longer an issue, I say that we use that little file we have on Alexander and August’s father to help Kincaid’s crusade along,” Stone suggested. “Seems like a waste of good blackmail material if we don’t do anything with it.”

“Plus, I can’t feel sorry for Alexander,” Hastings added. “It’s his fault that things got to the point where Kincaid had to kill August.”

“That’s not a bad idea,” Saxton remarked.

I scanned the faces of my friends again. “On one condition, though,” I said. “Since all of this could very well blow up in my face, I don’t want Alexander suspecting that you guys are involved.” Stone immediately opened his mouth, and I threw my hand up to stop him. “Your father is on the panel, Stone. That puts you in a very delicate situation. And while I have no doubt that you men can protect your wives, I’d rather they not land on The Order’s radar if we can avoid it.” I eyed each person in the room. “I have no problem going up in flames as it all burns down around me. However, I have a problem with any of you being causalities, especially if it can be avoided.”

Ross leaned forward in his seat. “You do know that it goes against everything male in me to allow you to Joan of Arc this thing, right?”

“Welcome to my world,” Saxton grumbled like a toddler.

I chuckled. “Does Ross Carmichael have a delicate ego?”

“You emasculated us enough by killing August for us,” Stone snorted. “Give us a break here, Kincaid.”

At that, I laughed. “Trust me, your masculinity is safe with us. Besides, I killed a coward, not a man.”

“Thanks for that pitiful attempt at returning my balls,” Ross teased, and the girls started laughing.

After a few comfortable seconds, Stone finally relented. “Fine, we’ll play it your way, Kincaid. However, you have to promise that you’ll come to us the second that you feel like you need us. That’s my condition.”

“I can do that,” I told him.

“Uh…”

I looked over at Rylee. “Yeah?”

“Well, not to bring up…any unpleasantness, but what about Fox?”

His name felt like a kick in the chest, but I ignored it. “What about him?”

“Well, what if…I mean, he was pretty mad, Kincaid,” she grumbled. “What if he tells them what you’re up to?”

“He won’t do that,” Saxon answered, and we both turned to look at him.

“How do you know that?” Rylee asked.

“Fox Harrington might be a lot of things, but shady isn’t one of them,” he said. “He might not be with us, but he won’t be against us, either. He made it clear that he was still good with us when he left. He knows that can’t happen if he sells Kincaid out.”

“Maybe he just needs to…calm down,” Sutton suggested.

I looked over at her, and I knew that I didn’t want anyone walking out of here with the wrong idea. “I can’t say what Fox will or won’t do, but he’s not in the wrong here,” I told him. “He has every right to hate me. He has every right to never speak to me again. I don’t begrudge him one single emotion that he has at my expense. The only exception was that shit about me and Saxton. He can tarnish my reputation and call out my integrity all he wants; he can’t talk shit about Saxton, though.”

“So…what are you going to do?” Hastings asked.

“Nothing,” I told her honestly. “There’s nothing to do. You heard him just as well as I did. He wants nothing to do with me ever again, and I don’t blame him.”

I didn’t blame him at all.
