He nodded. “Okay. What is it?”

“I know about the coroner the same way I know about everything else,” I told him. “Kincaid.”

The man was quick. “She’s out for revenge.”

I shook my head. “No. She’s out for justice,” I corrected. “And if that means taking down every member of The Order, she’s okay with that.”

“She can’t do that,” he replied, shocked. “If nothing else, it puts a price on her head.” I shot him a look, and it was enough. “She doesn’t care, does she?”

“In fact, she’s prepared for it,” I agreed. “The girl has been doing nothing but obsessing over avenging her brother for over eight years, Dad. Think about that. This is Kincaid Black that we’re talking about. She’s got information on every member of this organization, specifically Alexander, Jacob, Donovan, and the governing panel of eight years ago.”

His face lost a bit of color, but he kept his composure. “Why are you telling me all this?”

“Because Kincaid has…” I leaned back and let out a sigh, trying to find a way to best describe the change that’s come over her. “Well, she’s willing to settle for private justice, instead of the bloodbath that she had originally planned. I’m here to help make that happen.”

“What do you know?”

Putting all my trust in my father, I told him everything. I even included Kincaid threatening Alexander with a knife. I told him all about August, and even August and Donald’s affair. Still, I hadn’t stopped there. As a witness to what she’d done to me three years ago, I even told him why she had broken up with me. All the pieces fell in place to paint a picture of a girl who they should be scared of.

“Ansel Voss never said anything,” he finally said. “He never brought up any concerns about Apollo’s death.”

“He didn’t say anything to you,” I corrected. “But he might have to someone else.”

“Fox-”

“Look, Dad, I’m here for two reasons,” I said, interrupting him. “For help and to warn you.”

“Warn me?”

“I choose Kincaid, Dad,” I told him. “If she goes down in flames over this, I’m burning with her.”

His face twisted with emotion. In this moment, he wasn’t a panel member of The Order. In this moment, he was my father. “Fox…son-”

I threw my hand up to stop him. “She’s not wrong, Dad,” I pointed out. “Apollo Black is the victim, not the organization. Not Donovan Cooper, Alexander George, or Jacob Townsend. The Blacks are the victims. And if you’re not worried of what Kincaid can do, imagine what Merrick Black will do when he finds out The Order is responsible for the destruction of both his children? And with Patricia Black at his side? I’ve got news for you, Dad. The panel should be scared. Everyone should be.”

We sat in silence for a while, letting all the dust settled. Finally, he asked, “And you say Jonathan Lexington is aware of what’s going on?”

I shook my head. “No,” I clarified. “Stone only asked for reports on Alexander, Jacob, and Donovan. Stone never told him the full truth.”

My father let out a tired breath, and I understood it. It was a lot. “What do you need from me, Fox?”

My back straightened, and a small part of me was surprised. Power and wealth were a dangerous combination, and some parents didn’t always choose their children over it.

“I need to know who ordered that second autopsy,” I told him. “With the coroner dead, it’s hard to question him.”

He gave me a terse nod. “Okay. I’ll see what I can do.”

I stood up. “Thanks.”

He stood up as well. “Just…be careful, son.”

“I’m covered, Dad,” I told him. “After all, I got Kincaid Black on my side.”
