That surprised me. “Me?”

She nodded. “I would think about all the people that I cared about, and it would remind me that I was more than my obsession with Apollo. It would remind me that I did have feelings outside of revenge. It’s hard to explain.”

Not wanting to upset her, I asked, “So, what did you mean by you might not be home tonight?”

“I’ve fallen asleep out here a few times,” she grimaced.

“Jesus Christ, Kincaid.”

“I know, but-”

“Yeah, no more coming out here alone,” I told her. “If you want to be alone, I’m okay with that. I’ll wait on the road in the car for however long you need to get your shit together, but no more coming out here alone.”

Her lips twitched, but she didn’t argue like I expected her to. Instead, she walked towards me and away from the damn edge of the cliff. “Afraid I’m going to make you a widow, Mr. Harrington?” she teased, but I wasn’t in the mood.

“Don’t even joke about that, Kincaid,” I replied seriously. “If you think that I’m above chaining you to our bed to keep anything from ever happening to you, you’re sorely mistaken.”

Her black eyes regarded me seriously before asking, “Why did you drive two hours to come here, Fox?”

“Because I’m sick,” I told her honestly. “Because I don’t know how to go hours without you now that I have you back. Because there’s still a small part of me that thinks I’m going to wake up one day and never see you again. Because this thing between us goes way beyond an addiction or obsession.”

She didn’t tell me that I was being unreasonable. She didn’t try to soothe my irrationality with sweet platitudes. She simply asked, “What do you think it is, then?”

“I have no idea,” I replied, and she just nodded in complete agreement. “I also have something that I need to tell you.”

“What?”

“If it’s alright with you, I’d rather not talk here,” I grumbled like a pussy. “I’m not scared of heights or anything, but…I can’t have you this close to-”

“I get it,” she said, granting me some mercy. “Let’s go back to the cars.”

Once we got back to where our cars were parked, I sat her on the hood of my car, then told her everything about my visit with my parents. I didn’t leave anything out, either. She listened while I talked, and I just prayed that she wouldn’t see it as me betraying her or some shit like that. I wasn’t looking forward to having to start from scratch with the girl again.

I watched as Kincaid slid off my car and begin to pace. Her hands were running through her black hair, messing up the ponytail she had going on. “I never planned on bringing anyone else in on this,” she mumbled, talking to herself more than she was me. “No one was supposed to know. No one was supposed to…care.”

When she got close enough, my arm reached out, my hand grabbed the fabric of her shirt, then I hauled her back. “Tough shit,” I bit out. “Even without my father knowing, you have a lot of people who care now, and not just me and Saxton.”

I watched her shoulders sag. “I know,” she whispered. “I know.”

“Just…trust me, okay? We got this, baby.”

Instead of kicking off an argument about not trusting me, she asked, “Can we just go home? I’m…I’m done here for now.”

I had to grit my teeth, but I conceded. “I’ll follow you back.” I stepped to put her in her car, but her hand stopped me. “What’s wrong?”

With her eyes wide and full of emotion, she said, “I love you, Fox. I really do.”

“I know you do, baby.”

She shook her head sadly. “No, I don’t think you really do.”
