I choked out a laugh. “Honestly, I don’t know, Dad.” I cleaned my face and did my best to look decent. “I’m not used to…all these emotions winning.”

“I know,” he replied. “Your mother and I have discussed your…uh, inability to process emotion.”

“I’m not a robot, Dad,” I remarked dryly.

“Perhaps not,” he joked softly. “But you are…stronger than most.”

My brows furrowed with concern. “I am,” I agreed. “I also know that you’re referring to my damage as politely as possible, but that’s okay.”

“Kincaid-”

“Dad, Fox loves me,” I blurted, interrupting whatever he’d been about to say. “He loves me as I am right now, flawed as hell and dangerously reckless.” I straightened my back. “I’m telling you this because…well, because he’s it, Dad. Fox Harrington is the man that I’m going to marry. If all this works out, and we don’t end up dead or in prison, I’m marrying him.”

“Kincaid, I am not going to allow you to go to prison,” he said sternly. “And I’m sure as hell not going to lose you like I lost your brother. I don’t care if you leave a trail of bloody bodies that lead to your front door. I’ll ship you off to a non-extradition country first.”

“That’s very supportive of you,” I grinned.

He smiled back, but the stress of what he’d just learned was still there in his eyes. I knew that he was trying to keep it together for me, but I couldn’t imagine what things were going to be like tonight when he went home and told my mother. There’s no way he would keep something like this from my mother.

“So, Fox Harrington, huh?”

I nodded. “Yep, Fox Harrington.”

“Okay, can you do me a favor?” I nodded again. “Just give me a few days to see what I can find out. I agree that we need to find out who ordered that second autopsy.”

“The answer lies with Donovan, Alexander, and/or Jacob,” I said. “They have to know who it is.”

My dad started tapping his fingers against his lips. “Someone orchestrated it, but I don’t think it was Donovan,” he replied. “Not if he called the other two in a panic.”

“I agree.” Donovan didn’t have the kind of discipline to cover up something like this.

“That leaves Jacob or Alexander.”

“My money’s on Alexander,” I told him. “He’s always been the key.”
