Chapter 4

Fox~

I hadn’t come over here for this.

Honest.

After spending all day not learning a goddamn thing because my mind had been too preoccupied with Kincaid and the shitshow with my parents this morning, I had done my best to spend it trying to calm down. Kincaid and I needed to talk, and I hadn’t wanted to do it with tempers flaring-or my temper flaring.

So, the plan had been to come over and get the details of her interrogation, anything that was discussed with her parents, and what we needed to do next. While we were all fairly certain that Kincaid would avoid being brought up on charges, I couldn’t ignore the serious concern in my father’s voice this morning. The organization viewed Kincaid as a wild arrow, everyone wondering who she would shoot next.

It was also time for our talk. The one where I finally got answers on why she had broken up with me three years ago. The one where we clarified what it was that we were doing now. The one where she explained why I hadn’t known about her friendship with Saxton. The one where I could finally forgive her and move the fuck on.

That had been the plan.

We couldn’t wait any longer.

I couldn’t wait any longer.

So, that had been the plan until I saw her face. Until I saw the gash, the bruises, the proof of why this girl was so dangerous for my peace of mind. It wasn’t that she invited trouble her way, that wasn’t it. It was that she wasn’t afraid of it, should it make an appearance.

When August had shown up in that room, any other girl would have whipped out her phone and dialed the police, boyfriend, campus security, someone-anyone.

Not Kincaid, though.

The fucking girl had taunted him. Had dared him. She had stared him in the face, knowing that he was twice her size, and hadn’t given a good goddamn fuck that August had been out for blood. Kincaid had pushed him until the motherfucker charged her, wanting to make her pay.

With the last of my clothing lying on the floor, I made my way towards the shower, knowing that we weren’t going to make it to her bedroom. I was so hard that it bordered on painful. I wanted to kill August and punish her, and since August was dead, that left Kincaid.

She stepped back until her back was against the tiled wall. With her black eyes drinking me in, she asked, “Why is the study in your condo a ruined mess?”

That first night at my place, I hadn’t taken any chances. Not only had I fucked her all night long, but I had fucked her all over my condo. I hadn’t wanted any place untouched by the memory of me buried deep inside her. I had wanted every inch of my place re-christened with her scent, her moans, her cries, and her presence. While we hadn’t fucked in the study because of the condition it was in, there was no way she could have missed it. The room was a fucking mess.

Stepping into the shower, I told her the truth. “I did that the night you told me there was someone else.”

Pain and regret flared in her eyes. “Why haven’t you cleaned it up?”

We were standing toe-to-toe now, my body shielding her from the spray of the water. My hand came up and circled her neck, her skin soft and wet. My thumb swept over the bruise on her jaw as my eyes noted every single mark on her body. Of course, I knew that there were more on her back, but the ones I could see were enough. They were enough to enrage me and emasculate me at the same time.

When I was finished torturing myself, I looked back into her eyes and told her the truth. “I needed the reminder to help stay away from you.”

“Reminder of what?”

“How viciously you are capable of destroying me,” I answered truthfully. “Knowing that I never wanted to feel like that again, I left it as is. A constant reminder to stay away from you.”

Her breath hitched, her eyes sliding away.

My stomach dropped with fear.

Actual fucking fear.

The organization wasn’t the only one who viewed Kincaid as a wild arrow. Though I’ve made it clear where I stood with us, she hasn’t said anything about never leaving me again. In fact, she hasn’t spouted any pretty promises at all.

“Look at me,” I commanded. Since the girl wasn’t a coward, her eyes lifted towards mine. “I’m never letting you go again, Kincaid.”

“Fox-”

“I’ll clean that room this weekend,” I promised. “I’ll repair it and-” Her lips were on mine before I could finish making any more promises.
