Chapter 5

Kincaid~

While my eye was still black and the gash still visible, the looks didn’t bother me. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that I’d been the girl who had killed August Remington. My reputation was what it was, so there’d only be one reason that I would look like this. However, the fact that I had literally defended myself to the death was doing nothing but adding more fuel to my blazing reputation. I had killed someone, and here I was, only a couple of days later, attending classes like I didn’t give a fuck.

And I really, really didn’t.

There was also the fact that Fox and Saxton were still mad at me for what happened. I could feel it, even if they hadn’t yelled at me yet. Fox was still trying to get a rein on his anger, and Saxton was just waiting to get me alone. I didn’t blame them, though. I was a hard person to love.

Speaking of love, I also knew that Fox was at the end of his emotional rope with me. After what I’d done to him, I knew that he needed words. I knew that he needed the assurance that just sleeping with him wasn’t providing. I also knew that he was letting me get away with deflecting whenever things got too personal. He was trying to give me time, but what he didn’t know was that I didn’t need time to tell him how I felt. I just needed to come clean. Before I made my own promises of forever, I wanted him to know everything. I wanted him to make an informed decision about being with me. Right now, it was easy for him to promise me forever because he didn’t know what I was up to. That could all change once I told him the truth.

Once I told them all the truth.

Coming out of my second class, I saw Hastings, Saxton, and Ross all gathered together near the art building. There was a coffee truck behind them, and it was calling my name. Fox had kept me up way past what was reasonable last night. Not that I was complaining, mind you.

As I made my way towards the group, I saw Rylee and Sutton walking around from the lab building. When Rylee saw me, she waved. I smiled and waved back. One of the good things to have come out of all this was my friendship with Rylee. Rylee was one-of-a-kind, and the girl was fiercely loyal. I loved that about her.

The timing had us all reaching Hastings, Saxton, and Ross. “Where’s Stone?” I asked Rylee as soon as we were within ear shot.

She glanced at her watch. “He should be pulling into the parking lot right about now.”

“How are you feeling?” Hastings asked, her pretty face full of concern.

“I’m good,” I told her. “A few bruises, but that’s about it.”

“Is it in poor form to feel happy that August got his ass kicked by a girl?” Sutton whispered. “I mean, it’s kind of awesome in a morbid sort of way.” Ross just grinned as he wrapped his arm around his wife.

I shrugged. “He was just too angry to fight with any kind of rationale,” I told her before glancing over at Rylee. “When I mentioned you, the dude really lost it. I’m convinced that you never would have been safe, Rylee. I’m glad he’s dead for that alone if nothing else.”

Her lips pinched. “Well, I’m not too upset at his passing myself, but I just…I mean, I know you kickbox and do that crazy Krav Maga stuff, but I just never imagined that you could…fight so lethally.”

“What’s the point of it all if I can’t?” I asked.

“Good point,” she mumbled.

Just then, I spotted her husband making his way towards us. “There’s the hubby.” I jerked my chin in his direction. Rylee turned around, and the smile on her face was worth killing August Remington.

As Stone made his way over, Saxton started in on me. “We need to talk, babe.”

I let out a dramatic sigh. “I know,” I grumbled theatrically. “But can you at least give me a day or two before you go all big brother on me?”

Saxton speared me with a look. “You wish I was going to go big brother on you. This is parental status as far as I’m concerned.”

Before I could sigh again, Stone was greeting us all as he came up behind Rylee, wrapping his arms around her waist. “Did you guys all get Alexander’s text last night?”

We all nodded with Ross saying, “It was to be expected, though.”

“Did your dad have anything to say about what the panel’s thinking?” Saxton asked him.

Stone shook his head. “No. I haven’t spoken to him since he flew out yesterday. I imagine he’ll be meeting with them this weekend if they haven’t already met.”

Ross looked over at me. “Has Fox said anything? Like, did his dad tell him anything?”

This time, I was the one who shook my head. “No, but I didn’t ask.”

Hastings eyes widened. “You didn’t ask? You’re not curious?”

“I’m not going to put Fox or his father in that position,” I told her. “Whatever happens, happens. Plus, even though there are only a couple of news vans still hanging around, I’ve noticed a certain detective is still lurking around.”
