I look past the ones directly in front of me and see there are four more vanities with names above them.

Trinity. Lola. Candy. Geani.

I stare at them, unsure of which of them is supposed to belong to me, if any. Maybe I’m just someone they adopted after the chaos of last night.

Lexus taps the chair on the vanity beside hers and smirks at me. “You may be smokin’ hot, babe, but you need to do some work before we go out there.”

I look at the sign on the vanity she’s pointing to.Trinity.

Trinity is a stripper’s name.

Cautiously, I walk over to the vanity and sit down in front of the mirror.

“You okay, babe?” Lexus asks as she picks up one of her makeup brushes. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

I shake my head. “I shouldn’t be here.”

Carmen walks behind me and laughs. “Me either. I was supposed to be teaching the fourth grade and going home to my lawyer husband. Not attending law school myself and shaking my ass on the side.”

Lawyer husband. I wish I could get a hold of him.

I smile at her, but I feel the bile rising in my throat. There’s so much going on and I need to wake up from this nightmare.

Another woman walks into the room and smirks at me. “Hey, Trin. Glad you could join us today.”

She called me Trin. Short for Trinity.

Why do they all know me? Where did this name come from?

I have to find Nick.

I get up from the vanity stool and instantly feel dizzy. My throat burns as the vomit rises and spills onto the floor at my feet. Multiple women gasp at the chaos in front of them, but Lexus is quick to grab a bucket from her vanity and toss it into my hands. I continue to retch until my stomach is empty, though it didn’t feel that full to begin with.

When the dry heaving stops and every last drop from my stomach is now resting in the container in my hands, I set the bucket down and look around the room. I feel the drool dripping from my lip and the tears resting on my eyelids.

“I want to go home,” I whisper.

Lexus nods and I can see the concern in her eyes. “Alright,” she says.

The sound of a door opening resonates in my ears and whispers fill the room. I hear echoes of the name Tommy and “he’s here” as everyone scurries to find a seat.

“Alaska, go take care of Tommy. I’m going to get her back to bed.” Lexus says quickly. She grabs my arm and leads me toward the door.

“What do I tell Tommy?” Alaska asks with wide eyes. She’s so tiny and I don’t see why Lexus would choose her to be the messenger. Send Carmen. Carmen at least has a bite to her tone when she needs one.

“Tell him that she’s on the rag,” Lexus says. “He hates periods.” Alaska nods and disappears out the door. Lexus looks at me once we’re in the car and says, “Girl. You are in for a world of hurt when you go back to the club tonight. Sleep it off and get back as soon as you can. I’ll leave cab cash on the table when we get home.”

“I’m hoping when I wake up, I won’t be in this nightmare anymore,” I admit. Unsure of what I actually mean when I say it.

Lexus laughs. “For your sake, I hope you aren’t either.”

Chapter four

I Can't Wake Up

Idon’tfallbackto sleep when Lexus takes me back to the house. Instead, I hide in the bedroom and listen for the car to pull out of the driveway. The tail lights flicker a few times and it makes me thankful that I’m finally out of the car as I remember her constant need to tap the brakes and make my head bob.

When the sweet sound of stones crunching grows quiet outside, I do a quick check out the window to make sure she’s gone.
