The name sends a surge through my body and I go silent on the phone.

“Dee?” the nurse says. “Are you still there?”

“Yes,” I say. “Tuesday at eleven. That’s fine with me.”

I end the call and sit and stare out at nothing in particular. I guess it would make sense. Vanessa was such a mother hen and never showed any signs of being sick or injured.

“Shewouldturn out to be my doctor,” I say to myself.

“What’s that?” Rachel asks as she returns to the porch with two mugs.

“Nothing,” I say. “Thank you.”

I take a big sniff of my mug and let my eyes flutter closed.

My heart is where it belongs. Here with my friends and family.

Yet all I can think about is how sexy I felt flinging my bombshell body around a metal pole.

Nick goes to have the girls chase him, but he tilts his head as he studies me.

“What’s up?” he asks, walking up to me and leaning his elbows on the banister of the porch.

I smile at him. “Just had a thought for our next date night,” I say.

“Oh yeah?” His smile is reaching from ear to ear at the mention of a date. Rachel smiles too, knowing she’ll be the designated babysitter for the evening. “What did you have in mind?”

Putting on my best seductive expression, I lower my voice and ask through an angelic smile, “I think we should go to a strip club.”
