I get out of the water, my hair soaked, and walk briskly across the hot sand. I lie flat on my stomach on my towel, which is a few feet away from Scarlett’s towel, who hasn’t moved since we arrived. The saltwater drops slide down my face and I lick my lips.

“You know if you stay here, you’ll end up red as a lobster, Scar?” I ask.

“Shut up, Nolan. If I wanted your opinion, I would’ve asked for it.”

I burst out laughing as the guys join us. Edgar quickly dries himself before sitting down in the empty space between his sister and me.

“You don’t have to be rude, Scarlett. And drop that damn phone, enjoy the sun!”

She sighs, looking moody, and puts her phone back in the bag behind her.

“Leave her, Ed, she’s trying to get the guy she scared off last night by opening her mouth,” I tease.

I narrowly avoid the denim shorts she throws at me. I try to stifle my laughter with my towel, but I know that I am doing a terrible job. With her big sunglasses eating up half of her face, it’s impossible to see her eyebrows, but I’m sure they’re asfurrowed as possible.

So easy to piss her off.

“How touchy this child is!”

“I had forgotten how tiring you two are,” Edgar breathes. “Sometimes I wonder who’s the more immature of the two.”

“No need to ask that question,” Scarlett sneers. “He’s wearing yellow swim shorts and he’s got the most punchable face on earth!”

I blow her a kiss and she gives me the middle finger. I laugh like a kid. Edgar is right on this point. Sometimes I wonder if I’m not even more childish than her. She brings that out in me and not having seen her for almost a year makes me want to make up for lost time. Even though the Scarlett that flew out that day isn’t the one lying on that beach. The body is the same, although I’ve never actually looked at it in detail.

I stare at her belly quickly then go up on her chest, dressed in a navy-blue swimsuit in the shape of a brassiere. Despite myself, I try to imagine what her breasts—compressed under the fabric—might look like. At that thought, an uncontrollable heat spreads in my lower abdomen. I immediately snap my gaze on her hair cut in a neglected bob. A few strands of which have brightened from the sun. I end up lowering my head, pressing my forehead to my towel to keep from ogling her any longer.

“Are you really talking to the guy from last night?” Edgar asks in a calm voice.

It’s a dangerous subject, especially when you consider that the night before he was pretty upset about it.

“Why, am I not allowed?” Scarlett asks.

“I don’t know,” Edgar replies. “I don’t know him.”

“Are you trying to make me believe you didn’t ask everyone at the party about him?”

I laugh, glancing mockingly at Leo.

“Touché,” Leo says, laughing in turn.

“I just don’t want it to be a second Evan Teryl,” Edgar responds.

“You’re still stuck on him? Seriously, it’s been over a year! Get over it,” Scarlett says.

“This guy was a jerk,” defends Leo.

“He didn’t deserve you.”

“It’s not up to you to decide that for me. If I want to go out with Corey, I do as I please.”

I sit up on my elbows, watching the brother and sister engage in a verbal sparring match, then roll onto my back. On that, I can only support my buddy. Scarlett has a habit of picking up assholes, and Evan Teryl was at the top of the list. It’s not for lack of having always kept an eye with who she hangs out with.

“Let it go, Ed,” I say casually. “This guy is neither a basketball player, nor a football player, nor anything that comes close or far from Teryl.”

I’m sure of it.

“Did you ask around?” Scarlett asks in an angry tone.
