“It’s Paige’s turn.”

She gives the dice to her best friend, whose six empty shots in front of her give her speak to her drunkenness. Especially since the evening had started long before this game and if I remember correctly, I had seen her pass through the kitchen to help herself to a drink several times. I look around me, easily finding the third girl in the group, Carol, who is chatting with a group of guys, includingBurtton. My jaw tightens.

I still don’t like this guy.

And I’m glad Scarlett is sleeping here tonight.

With rule number one as a bonus.

“Challenge your neighbor to the right or move back three squares.”

Paige leans over the game, thinking for a long second as she stares at the board.

“Sorry, Scar, but I’m not sure I can handle the two extra shots.”

“Traitor!”

Scarlett runs a hand through her loose hair, and I lean back in my chair a little more, dipping my legs under the table as I gaze at her amused face. The wrinkles at the corners of her eyes, her nose that curls up every time she smiles, the perfect alignment of her teeth, the height of her cheekbones. I frown. A silhouette disturbs my contemplation, and a large hand gently drapes around Scarlett’s neck.

The asshole Burtton.

He leans in, pretending that around this table his girlfriend’sbrother, Leo, and I are not present. He rests his chin on her shoulder, stares intently at the board, and whispers incomprehensible words in Scarlett’s ear. I cross my arms against my chest, repressing the sudden flush of annoyance mixed with something a little weird in my stomach, and throw a quick glance at Edgar.

He remains silent, one hand resting on the table, the second clenched in a fist. He doesn’t like it, but he says nothing, giving Scarlett the freedom to be with whomever she wants for the evening. Giving her space and the right to date a guy even if it really pisses him off.

It pisses me off too, especially tonight.

For some reason I can’t figure it out… once again.

Then Burtton leaves us as quickly as he arrived, finding the group he’s forming at the other end of the kitchen with the girls’ buddy.

“Scarlett,” Paige croons, pulling me out of my scrutiny. “Youdrink a shot for every guy in this room you want to fuck.”

“Are you serious?”

“Great, imagining my sister in bed with guys!”

“Not necessarily in bed,” Scarlett jokes.

Leo and Milo burst out laughing, I stifle mine at the blush on Edgar’s cheeks, who’s holding back from saying more. I ignore the tingle in my stomach at the mere mention of Scarlett, in bed, and stare at the gleam of a challenge that crosses her face. I know she’s capable of overdoing it just to piss him off.

“This is crap,” I say. “Your guy is here. No suspense.”

“Do you want to drink instead of her?” Paige exclaims. She takes a quick look around her before adding, “But it’s crap, your girlfriend isn’t here. No suspense.”

I chuckle at her comment and the whole table whistles.

“With Jones, it’s not likely to be limited to asingleshooter. Girlfriend or no girlfriend!”

Milo and Leo high fives each other, laughing at my roommate’s insinuation, and I roll my eyes, keeping a casual posture, leaning with insolence on my chair, arms crossed.

“Are you up to the challenge, number twelve?” Scarlett asks cheekily.

My eyes dive into her. Tequila in her hands, she fills several empty glasses in front of her before handing me the bottle, facing me with her gaze. I smile, proud and sure of myself. Deep down, I really wonder if she’s going to drink that much.

“Only five?”

My voice becomes teasing, and she gives me the middle finger.
