This girl is detestably beautiful.

“Oh, hi Harriet.”

I try to look detached, happy to see her, when basically it’s the battering ram that knocks down everything in its path. HereI am face to face with the girlfriend of the guy that I made out with on my couch.

Joy. Happiness. Gladness.

I smile with all my teeth, certain that I look constipated. She looks at me quickly and says out, “Is Nolan there?”

I frown and turn to the living room. Leo has not moved and looks at us sideways.

“In the shower. You can wait here until h—”

“I know the way. Thank you.”

She bypasses me easily and rushes to the door that leads to the hallway. A cloud of rose scent hits me, and I take a step back to keep our bodies from colliding. I close the door behind her, surprised by her coldness. She doesn’t say a word to Leo, and when I go back to my seat next to him, he raises a questioning eyebrow.

“The fury is out.”

“Does this happen often?” I wonder.

Since I moved here, she had never been here. He shrugs.

“Every time Nolan does something stupid.”

I wince, look down at the couch, and blush. “And heoftendoes something stupid?”

Leo is laughing and my stomach is twisting.

“It’s Nolan. Stupidity is his middle name.”

That’s new as a character trait.

“He’s cheating on Harriet?” I ask.

Even if the question I wanted to ask was:Am I not the only one?

“No!” Leo exclaims. “He’s not unfaithful. When I talk about stupidity, it’s mostly the improvised evenings he does without her. The drinking, the fights, things that drive her crazy. This girl is just annoying.”

“Strong competitor,” I joke in spite of myself.

Basically, I mainly stopped at the fact that he’s not unfaithful.

Is kissing a girl on a couch like he did the other time considered cheating?

Ignoring and never talking about it again, does that make him an asshole?

And I, a coward. Beautiful team.

“Don’t worry, Scar, no one can dethrone you. You are Mrs. Annoying!”

I slap him on the back of the head, and he bursts out laughing. We both stop as voices rise in the hallway, louder and closer.

“Are you serious?”

I’m listening, unable to accurately hear Nolan’s answer as Harriet continues to scream. Edgar arrives at this moment and watches us both sitting on the couch. He stares at the hallway door and rolls his eyes.

“Again?” he complains. “I thought we were done with stupid hysterical outbursts.”
