"Better check it, just to be sure."

I wriggle out from under her and march across the room to dig her mobile out from under her wedding dress, which had wound up piled on a chair. I glance at the phone's screen and curse in Gaelic.

"What's wrong?" Calli asks, sitting up.

"It's the surgery." I toss her the mobile.

She catches it in one hand. "My checkup? Probably calling to tell me the blood tests were fine. It was a standard physical, that's all."

"They called on our wedding day. Must be urgent."

"Don't turn into a worrywart. That's my job." She holds the phone to her ear. "This is Calli."

Since I can't hear the other side of the conversation, all I can do is wait and worry, though I don't develop any warts from doing that. Calli's eyes have widened a touch. Is it bad news after all?

"Surprise?" she says.

The word must mean it's good news. Right? Of course, there are bad surprises too.

I glance down at my naked body. Is that a wart forming on my cock? Need to stop fretting.

"What?" my wife virtually shouts. "That's incredible. I thought it would take longer to happen, but this is such perfect timing. Thank you for calling. I have no idea what to say."

Calli listens briefly, then says goodbye to the other person. She drops her mobile on the bed and looks at me.

I grasp her face in my hands, searching her eyes. "What is it? Are you ill?"

"No, not at all." She lays her hands over mine while tears trickle down her cheeks, and then she smiles. "We're having a baby, Aidan. I'm pregnant."

For a few seconds, I stare blankly at her. Did I hear that right? Did she say what I think she did?Aye, of course she did, ye numpty.

I let out an ear-splitting, uproarious whoop, throwing my head while I fling my arms wide. The whoop segues into laughter, and I leap onto the bed, bowling Calli over with me. Tangled in each other's arms, we laugh and cry and kiss. Yes, I cry. A wee bit. Not enough to count as crying, really. Our kissing grows more heated while our hands grope each other's bodies and myslatstarts to swell again.

I lick and nibble a path down her neck. "This requires another celebration."

"You mean sex."

"Would ye rather drink champagne?"

"Oh no. I want sex, right now."

Bod an Donais, is it any mystery why I love this woman?

I push up onto my knees. "I'd wager we made the bairn that day under the apple tree."

"The magic fertility tree? I think so too." Her lids flutter shut when I skim my hands up and down her body, exploring every curve and dip. "This might sound weird, but I'm looking forward to coming back after the honeymoon and getting to work. Cataloging your uncle's piles and piles of family papers and historical books is like catnip to a librarian."

"I'm looking forward to working with my new partner." I dip my tongue into her belly button, swirling it until she gasps. "The best partner a man could want. My bonnie, clever wife."

Settling onto the bed beside her, I rest my head on her belly and press my ear to her womb. My lips form another smile, a softer one this time. "I was right again. Said you could give me everything I wanted, and you have."

"Don't get arrogant about it. You might be wrong at some point."

"Maybe." I kiss her belly and smirk. "Donnae hold your breath, though."

She grabs a pillow and whaps me on the head with it.

I pepper kisses over her silky skin, up between her breasts, to the hollow of her throat. There, I breathe words against her flesh. "I want you again, but only if it willnae hurt the wee one."
