I push up into a half-sitting position, still on my side, held up by one hand flat on my towel. "Tell me your rules, then."
She bites her upper lip, then inhales a deep breath and blows it out. "These are my rules. No sex, no love, no marriage."
This has to be a joke. A sensual, vibrant lass like her wouldn't take a celibacy vow, not after the way she kissed me. "I don't understand. Not wanting marriage, that's not too unusual. But no love? Giving up sex is one thing but—"
"I haven't given up sex."
My brows lift, and I open my mouth two seconds before I manage to speak. "You just said—"
She silences me by holding up one finger. "I said exactly what I meant. Don't make assumptions about what you think it means, take it at face value."
Take what at face value? I have no ruddy idea. Maybe she is a bampot after all, but I still want her like mad. I like insane women? Ah well, I learn something new about myself every day. I probably look confused—because I am.
Calli seems to realize that. She sighs, and her shoulders crumple. "I've never had sex, therefore I can't give it up. I am a twenty-five-year-old virgin."
I shrug. "Are you thinking I'll be shocked? I'm not."
She folds her arms atop her knees. "No one in this day and age believes a person over the age of eighteen could be a virgin unless there's something terribly wrong with them."
Ah, so that's the problem. I lean forward to touch her arm. "I've been with virgins older than you."
"They must've been nuns, right?"
"No. Each had her reasons for staying innocent, and I'm sure you have yours."
"I'm not innocent."
She might not be insane, but she seems determined to drive me off my head. I stare at her for several seconds while I try to puzzle out the meaning of what she said, but I fail. "You are a confusing woman. How are you not innocent if you're a virgin?"
"You're making assumptions again." She shivers faintly when I start to caress her skin with my fingertips. Sidling away from me, beyond my reach, she faces the lake again and stretches out her shapely legs, leaning back to brace her hands on the towel behind her. "I've never had sexual intercourse with anyone, but that doesn't mean I'm ignorant of all sexual knowledge."
I scan my gaze up and down her body one more time, from her shoe-covered feet, up her bare legs, past those mouthwatering breasts, and finally to her lovely face. "You're very comfortable with your body, aren't you? Not embarrassed to show it off."
"I don't usually dress this way. Sweats and baggy T-shirts are my MO. What does my clothing have to do with the topic at hand?"
"You say you're not innocent, and I'm noticing how you're at ease with your sensuality. But I could use a wee bit of help connecting the dots here."
She avoids my gaze even when I sit up to look at her. "Tell me, what do you think being a virgin means? In terms of sexual experience?"
"Means no experience, of course."
"Not for me." Calli squeezes her eyes shut like she needs to force herself to speak the words. "Just because I've never been touched by a man doesn't mean I have no idea what pleasure feels like. There are other ways to, um…have orgasms."
