Page 70 of Aidan in a Kilt

When Jamie and I emerge from the guest bedroom, returning to the living room, Gavin is gone. I have no illusions that he's flown back to wherever he lives, but at least his hunting shack is separated from the house. I feel like battering someone or breaking a piece of furniture, but Jamie seems quite cheerful and pleased with herself.

"Sooo," Jamie coos, "we should get to know each other, Calli. Since you're going to be my sister-in-law."

I raise my hands, mouth open, and shake my head at Calli. "Didnae say a word to her."

Jamie studies us both with her lips quirked. "Didnae have to, Aidan. I have eyes, and I'm not an eejit. Besides, you told everyone you were coming to America to find a wife like Lachlan did."

Since I can't think of a bloody thing to say, I aim a pleading look at Calli. As if she can save me from my sister's nosiness.

Calli takes pity on me and refrains from telling my sister she insists she'll never marry me. Instead, she tells Jamie, "It's a bit early to think about that."

"Aye," Jamie agrees, "but Aidan has a way of convincing women to do almost anything."

"Does he now." Calli arches her brows at me.

I hike up my shoulders, showing her my palms. We both know I've already convinced Calli to do a lot of things she swore she'd never do, like sleeping with me. But I donnae like hearing my sister announce I do that. What if Calli decides I'm a Don Juan again?

"Where's Gavin?" Jamie asks, glancing around as if he might be hiding behind the bar.

"He's staying in the hunting cabin out in the woods," Calli says. "We'll see him again at lunch."

Does Jamie seem disappointed by the news? My need to beat something or someone to a pulp returns, but I try to stay calm.

"Mind if I have a shower?" Jamie asks. "Airline travel makes me feel grimy."

"Go right ahead," Calli says, gesturing toward the hallway. "Bathroom's on the left."

"I know, Aidan showed me." She starts to turn away, then looks at Calli. "Thank you for letting me stay here."

"No problem."

Jamie disappears down the hall.

When the bathroom door clicks shut, I approach Calli and slip my hand into hers as we face each other. She laces her fingers with mine, and I feel myself relaxing because of her touch. For a moment, I just gaze into her eyes, wondering if she will ever admit she wants to be with me as much as I want to be with her. Maybe when pigs fly.

I should go buy a herd of the beggars and install them in the backyard, then glue wings to their backs. Aye, because pushing Calli to love me won't backfire at all.

Giving up on my musings, I sigh. "Quite a full house, eh?"

"Definitely." She tips toward me a wee bit. "Your sister and my brother seem rather smitten with each other."

"I'd like to tell Gavin to stay away from my sister, but I suppose that would be, ah…"

"Hypocritical?"

"Yes."

She rises onto her tiptoes to peck a kiss on my lips. "You MacTaggarts are a gorgeous bunch. Can't blame us mere mortals for falling to our knees before you."

"You haven't gone on your knees before me." I slide my free hand around to the small of her back, tugging her into my body. "But it's an intriguing idea."

Calli flattens her palm on my chest and gazes into my eyes. "Have you forgotten? I dropped to my knees and took you in my mouth."

A slow, naughty smile curves my mouth. "So you did. I have some other ideas for getting you on your knees, though, ones I'd love to try out tonight."

"Sounds good." She glances toward the hallway. "We have two visitors within earshot of our screaming orgasms. How do we keep them from hearing?"

I chuckle. "Jamie won't care how much noise we make."
