"I'm sorry, I really am." She bites her lip, hunching her shoulders. "It slipped out."

Lachlan's laughter finally subsides, but he still seems inordinately amused and quite pleased with himself. He claps a hand on my shoulder. "It was bound to come out sooner or later. Can't keep something like this a secret in the MacTaggart family."

I warp my mouth into a half frown, half-smile. "Not when we enjoy tormenting each other so much."

"I won't tell Aidan." Lachlan winks. "Probably."

Emery eyes us both. "Can I trust you to behave yourselves without me? The book Erica wants is in the bedroom."

"Aye, you can trust me," Lachlan says. "Can't speak for Rory, though. He seems to need his wife to keep him in line."

I purse my lips.

Emery pats my cheek. "Try not to kill each other until I get back."

"No promises," I say with a slight smile. "Lachie might deserve a right skelping."

"Lachie?" my brother says with a chuckle. "Oh, I am for certain telling Aidan what your wife calls you."

Shaking her head, Emery jogs off down the hall, out of sight.

I take her advice and let go of my humiliation. Lachlan and I spend the next few minutes discussing when we should hold Highland games on the green again, and when we might trounce the Buchanans in another shinty match. I prefer playing shinty on my wife's belly, but I will not admit that to my brother.

Emery returns, holding a book in one hand. A bit of newspaper covers the book, so I can't tell what it is.

Lachlan accepts the package. "Best get home. We'll see you two on Saturday. Your big day, as Erica calls it."

The wedding. Bod an Donais.

Once I hear the door to the outside clap shut, I relax at last. Setting a hand on the island, I lean into it. "What book are you lending Erica?"

"My copy of the Kama Sutra."

"What if I wanted to read it?"

"Happy to demonstrate my favorite parts for you." She bounces on the balls of her feet and rubs her hands together. "What should we do now?"

I push away from the counter, pick her up, and deposit my wife on the island beside her collection of dessert ingredients. Grabbing the can of whipped cream, I touch its tip to her breast. "I have ideas. And we have time before we leave for Inverness to meet your family."

She smiles, locking her legs around me. "Show me, Rory baby. You always have the best ideas."

And I donnae care that it's daytime.
