"Somebody tell me what the hell is going on," I say. "We don't have time to dance around whatever it is."

"You're right," Sarah says. "We've realized that sex is a vital component of stopping the apocalypse."

I stare at her. Is my mouth hanging open? I think it might be. For a moment, I can't think, much less come up with words. Sarah just announced that to save the world, we need to fuck. Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's what she meant. Not that I mind. But come on, we can't talk about sex in front of the others.

"We felt weird about it too, at first," Grant says. "But then we realized Sarah is right—and she's a genius."

"I knew that already," I say. "But how does getting naked save the worlds?"

Sarah rests her chin on my chest. "The first time Dax and Allison made love, it increased her Echo power. Erin and Grant experienced the same thing. You and I felt the same thing. Didn't we?"

"Well, yeah. But I don't know if I can, uh, get in the right frame of mind to do that right now. Besides, I'm still trapped in the machine."

"Don't worry about that."

"How do you plan to get around it? Having sex kind of requires physical contact."

She pats my chest. "Let me worry about that. You trust me, don't you?"

"Of course I do."

"Then trust me on this."

How can I say no to her? She's amazing, and I will do whatever she says we need to do. The fact that I love screwing her has nothing to do with my decision.

But I suddenly remember something. "Allison is very pregnant. We can't risk sending her to the epicenter of the apocalypse."

"We've taken care of that," Sarah says. "Using our combined Echo powers, we cast a protection spell around Allison."

"Can't we all get one of those?"

"We didn't want to deplete our magics when we still need to implement the plan. Allison needed the most protection. The rest of us can take care of ourselves."

She's right. We shouldn't waste energy. Because I have a feeling that we'll need every iota we have to defeat Sefton's quantum ghost and end the chaos.

"Okay," I tell Sarah. "Let's get this train rolling."

"There's one more thing we all need to discuss." She glances at each of our friends, then lifts her gaze to mine. "I believe we can restore the Earth to the way it was before the apocalypse, but there's a caveat."

"What is it?"

"I can't guarantee we will remember who we are now. The spell might erase our memories of everything before the Echo, and then we wouldn't know we ever loved each other." She glances at our friends again. "Or that we became a family."

We all just stand here, frozen and silent, as we digest what Sarah said. Forget her? Never. But we're talking about magics, and nothing is ever certain with that stuff. My life before the apocalypse had been dull and lonely. Then I got thrown into the hell of the Echo and became someone I never imagined I could become. The computer programmer turned into a fighter.

I'd love to say adios to the alchemy of worlds and see the Earth returned to its natural state. But I never want to give up the best thing that ever happened to me—finding Sarah. She taught me more than I could ever explain and changed me in all the best ways.

To lose her love… I'd rather die than forget about her.

Dax pulls Allison into his arms. "That's a hefty price to pay for saving the world. But we don't have a choice, do we? And you said you don't know for certain that we will lose our memories of knowing each other."

"That's right," Sarah says. "I believe with all my heart that we won't forget each other. But I won't swear it's a certainty. You need to know the risks."

Dax and Allison gaze into each other's eyes, and he brushes his fingers over his wife's cheek. "We must risk it."

She nods, as tears brim in her eyes.

Erin throws her arms around Grant's neck and whispers into his ear. He nods, and they both seem to be choked up. Grant sounds that way when he says, "We're on board, whatever might happen. Bringing back the world everyone used to know is worth the risk. And I believe, like Sarah does, that we won't forget each other."
