CHAPTER 5

Marie knocked the dooras if it’d bite back, and a mature woman’s firm voice answered, “Come in.”

Marie pushed the door open, and we stepped through at the same time, banging hips. She sighed and moved to the side to let me pass first.

“Thank you,” I said, forming a fist to bump hers, but when she refused to play along, I stalked into the room.

Marie followed like a good soldier, closed the door, and stationed herself by it.

I stopped in my tracks, my smile wilting when I saw who else was in the room.

I’d gotten ambushed.

All four demigods lounged on large, white leather chairs in a cozy office setting. The most distinguished decoration was a giant painting of a snowy landscape on the wall. I wanted to ask if the painting was real or a print, but I bit my tongue.

The demigods were dressed casually in T-shirts or polo shirts and jeans, showing off their delicious, manly bodies.

A gorgeous woman in a white suit jacket and skirt sat primly behind a large, shiny mahogany desk. Her auburn hair had been pinned stylishly to the top of her head. Her green eyes, a few shades lighter than mine, regarded me with open curiosity.

That made me like her a bit more, even though I was ready to defy this authority figure if she gave me a hard time.

“Is the air conditioning on, Headmistress Von Rouche?” I asked, testing her and flashing a mocking, friendly smile as I swept another gaze over the demigods.

As soon as I’d stepped in, all of them straightened on their chairs and focused on me like hawks watching a single dragon egg.

“Sorry, but don’t you think it’s a bit too hot in here?” I followed up with the headmistress.

Axel chuckled, and Marie snorted, but she dropped the noise immediately, as if she’d remembered who she was and whom she stood before.

I was indeed a bad influence on her, as she’d claimed.

Pigston, the asshole, remained stony, but his violet eyes stayed glued to me, too.

I saw red at the mere sight of him, but I tried to keep my rage at bay for the moment—which was nearly impossible. Before I lost shit, I reminded myself not to let him win. I wouldn’t allow him to get under my skin. So I did the best I could—I completely ignored his presence, as if he never existed.

But why the fuck was he even here? Hadn’t the other demigods promised to keep him the fuck away from me? But then, only a fool would believe a demigod’s word.

Zak smiled at me. He had a stunning smile, though he was never flashy. I’d learned from last night that he wasn’t used to competing for anyone’s affection unabashedly. But he’d never miss a chance to display his male merits in front of me.

“How was your breakfast, Rosebud?” he asked.

Marie looked taken aback. She would have more shocks today. I hoped she’d survive all of them.

The demigods set the rules for this world—the half they ruled with Ares, anyway—so they were above them. This apparently meant they didn’t care about social norms of humans and supernaturals, like not calling me by a pet name whenever and wherever they felt like it.

The headmistress remained unmoved. As the head of the Half-Blood Academy, she must have had plenty of dealings with the demigods.

“How do you think my breakfast went, Demigod of Sky?” I answered. “I was summoned. I had to leave my delicious bacon behind.”

Héctor turned his stern gaze on Marie, and the poor soldier shrank back.

“Hey, it’s totally not Marie’s fault,” I called. “She was taking orders from you guys.”

Axel smirked mischievously, unwilling to let go of any drama. “Did you drag Marigold from her seat while she was having breakfast, Marie?” he asked.
