Willing her to come out again.

Wishing I’d just gone up to her now, but only because it’s too late.

If my father knows I am interested in something, he’s sure to do all he can to make sure I can’t have it.

Not until I’ve done everything he wants me to do beforehand. Not until I’ve earned it.

For the Family, of course.

“I didn’t know you expected me to whack him,” I growl, grinding my jaw impatiently.

Wondering just how much more precious time I could lose today and what else could get between Jasmine and me.

The guy who she’s seen but never met already has a future mapped out for us both.

Somehow I just know that she belongs with me. If only there was an easier way to….

“I guess you’re not as tough as I thought,” my father sighs, slapping my thigh with his hand a few times.

Thinking.

“I guess we’ll go with plan B,” he says with a shrug, looking at me, almost with pity, before focusing his attention on the door handle.

A not-so-subtle instruction for me to get out.

But that suits me fine. I don’t mind walking home, not one bit.

Once I watch the fog of exhaust and the red of the taillights fade into the distance, I sigh and smile to myself again.

I know. At least I have more time to do what matters most right now, which is to introduce myself to the most beautiful girl in the world.

CHAPTERFIVE

Jasmine

I’m blond, sure.

But not stupid.

And my female intuition is a blazing inferno by the time my landlord leaves, and I scan the street, certain I’ve been followed, once I spot the huge, dark figure ducking back into a doorway.

What if I stumbled into something earlier that I shouldn’t have, without even meaning to?

A man like Portello wouldn’t just let me walk outta there, expecting me to turn up tomorrow.

Would he?

Once I’m inside my apartment, I can see down to the street, and when I spot the silver town car speeding up before screeching to a halt, I know I’m not imagining things.

I don’t expect to see my mystery man emerge from the shadows, almost getting pushed out of the car.

But it looks like they’re all together, and then it clicks.

He must work for Portello, who’s had him follow me home. Probably to watch me…or worse.

Do they wanna get rid of me?

I don’t plan on sticking around to find out.
