And I know long before I see tomorrow’s sunrise that I’ll be feeling the results of our efforts for a day or two to come.

CHAPTERFOURTEEN

Rocky

I watch her fighting off sleep, trying to hold a conversation with me.

And instead of going to the trouble of finding a working bed someplace, I tuck her in on the couch.

Ordering her to sleep, which she is in about a second after that.

The storm seems to have almost blown over and left us, with just a sheen of drizzle on the windows and the retreating rumbles of thunder as I stroke the hair back from Jasmine’s face.

I'm sure I am the proudest, happiest man in any storm in history.

“It’s started…tonight. We started our own family,” I murmur to her, leaning forward to kiss her cheek, settling back into my chair as she smiles.

Her eyes shut.

Her whole body relaxes into a deep sleep until morning.

It’s unlike me to get mushy or emotional, and I spend most of the night considering our options.

After counting the good ones, which I reckon we have about….

We have only one option. Skip the country or outer fucking space if you can afford it. I hear Mars is nice this time of year….

Maria Portello had the right idea. Leave a trace, but leave a well-planned trace.

An empty car on a highway in a storm is perfect. Nobody’s gonna think she just flew into the air after that.

And in the middle of a terrible storm too.

Fluked it or planned to the letter, but that’s only kudos to Maria.

Jasmine and I don’t have a chopper to come and get us right now, and I know as much as she’d put up with anything. I don’t want us to spend any more time here than we have to.

It’s too risky.

Plus, my woman needs somewhere with a real bath and a real bed.

Something I tell myself I’ll arrange before our next night together.

Plus, my bones aren’t getting any younger.

But at least you’re a real man now. No need to pretend anymore.

See. I know it was a big deal for Jasmine to be a virgin. But I just couldn’t bring myself to tell her it takes one to know one. After all these years, I’d almost convinced myself I wasn’t going to tell the same lies and stories to keep up appearances.

I’ve always been old-school like my folks were in the early days. And yes, that even includes no sex before marriage.

Or at least, no sex until you know it’s who you want to spend eternity with.

And finding Jasmine was like the key to everything for both of us. Forever.

I can tell her tomorrow or wake her now and tell her….

Or I could tell her in twenty years. I don’t think it would matter either way, but Iwilltell her if she doesn’t know already.
