“So…you thought you’d come and see me.” Her face turns a lovely shade of rose, quick to show with her ivory skin. “Well, I’m really happy you did.” Her blush deepens, and I can’t handle it.

“Well, if you’re that happy, get round this bar and give me a hug. Otherwise, I’m coming over it.”

I’m rewarded with a breath-taking smile as she darts through the rest of the bar and practically skips to throw herself at me. Turning, I drag her into me as soon as she’s close enough. Even sitting on the bar stool, I’m still larger than her, and she fits between my knees and against my chest so perfectly, it dries my mouth out. It’s been a long time since a female made me feel like this. I thought that part of me had died, gladly. This little barmaid has somehow brought it back to life.

“I can’t believe you came…” She pulls away, breathless, her heart beating so hard I can see her necklace dancing with it.

“I wanted to see you.” My hands cage her hips and stop her pulling away too far, her perfume so heavenly it might forever be ingrained in my brain.

“I have to close tonight.” Regret pulls her face down into a frown.

I can’t have that.

“That’s okay. I’ll sit and wait.” I wink, relieved to see her perk back up. I could get used to her looking at me like that.

“Are you sure?”

“Of course. I don’t want to be anywhere else.” I let her step away, already missing her body being so close.

“Okay. I’ll see if I can get off sooner…” Alice glances behind her to the girl now sending us curious looks. She’s going to get grilled by her as soon as she’s back behind the bar.

My eyes track her as she walks around, only pulling my gaze away to check the pub again. Possessiveness already courses through me, and I notice I’m not the only with a watchful eye on her.

I knew the pub was going to be full of the Hasting’s Hounds members, but I haven’t spotted the one I came to see. The gaffer. The leader. The boss who has prompted my visit. He’s been off the grid, and we haven’t been able to find him. He’s smart. Normally by now, I would have been able to find him. That’s what I do—locate the ones getting ready to run before they do and make them pay for the betrayal. He’s got to get what’s coming to him.

Alice was a means of getting to him, after I found the photos of them scattered online. There’s not many of them, but there’s no denying she has contact with him. So, the wedding she was looking for a date for has to be his. I’ve seen the wedding preparation posts online. Tomorrow’s wedding could be the last chance I have of getting him. If he thinks he’s taking my gaffer’s shipment and using it to fund their happily ever after, he has another thing coming.

Me.

I didn’t count on Alice beingmore. It’s going to break her when she finds out who I really am. Right now, I’m lucky no one knows. If I’d met any of them before, I wouldn’t get this time with her. I’m the man in the shadows—only called on to deal with the ones who need to be taught a lesson. I’ve never had anything against what I do…until Alice. Because no matter what I end up having to do to Tony, it will be Alice’s pain I care about.

“Are you okay? Can I get you a drink?” Her voice pulls me from my dark thoughts and acts as a saving grace. Even just for tonight, before she hates me, I get to have her as my angel.

“Yes, baby. Of course, I am. I’m here, getting to look at you finally.” I don’t care if I have to watch her work from this stool, so long as I get to see her. “Can I have a whisky and coke, please, darling?”

“Of course.”

Alice keeps my drink topped up throughout the evening, the clock hanging up behind the bar passing the time too quickly. Between patrons, she gravitates to stand across from me, our conversation flowing as easily as it does when we speak on the phone. I’ve never wanted to talk to someone as much as I do with her. I want to know her every dream, want, and desire and fulfil them all, because she’s so good and pure that she deserves it.

That’s just a dream. She’ll hate me tomorrow, that much I’m sure of. So, every adoring look she sends my way I want to lock in my brain. Hatred is going to replace it. There’s no escaping it.

I’m aware of the other barmaid watching me throughout the evening, and from her stance, I can tell how protective she is of Alice, even though she looks younger. From the way she carries herself, it’s obvious she’s been through something. Some kind of trauma that’s made her harden. At least I know she’ll be there for Alice tomorrow.

She rolls her eyes at whatever it is Alice is whispering to her, before nudging her with an elbow and jerking her chin towards the door.

Alice’s back is to me, but I can see her instant excitement. As graceful as a fairy, she spins and bounces her way over to me, reaching down to fling a jacket over her arm and grab a bag from behind the bar.

“I’m free to go.”

She exits from behind the bar, still dancing slightly as she comes to stand in front of me. When she’s close enough, my hands are touching her, holding the hips I’ve been dreaming about since the moment we started talking.

“Let’s get out of here, then. What are we doing?”

She glows up at me, her innocent eyes darkening to a mischievous glint. “I think we’ve talked about what we want to do enough…don’t you?” Her chest rises quicker with arousal, her voice becoming breathless.

This woman. I wanted to treat her like a princess, show her I’m not as bad as she’s going to think I am tomorrow, but if she wants to be bad, how am I meant to say no to that? Her body moves closer, till her tits are pressing against my chest and her breath is tickling my neck.

“Daddy was very clear on what he promised to do to me when he finally came to see me.”
