She grabbed it, tearing it open as quickly as she could while being careful not to damage whatever was inside.

Zoe,

I’m sorry for the way things ended between us at dinner. I know you have my best interests at heart and you promised Mom and Dad you would look after me, but I need to find out who I am for myself. I’ve decided to travel for a few weeks before starting at the hospital. I’m in this little place called Redwater... it’s so beautiful. Today I hiked to this magical place where these small waterfalls all cascade into one pool.

Tears welled in Zoe’s eyes. She couldn’t believe what she was holding in her hands—what she was reading.

I met someone at the hospital. His name is Peter; he’s one of the doctors. He’s traveling with me. You were right about Brandon, I just didn’t want to hear it. But he is a word I won’t use to tarnish this letter.

Anyway, I’ll be back in St. Louis in a few weeks’ time. I just wanted to write and let you know I’m okay. I smashed my phone a week ago and I’m ashamed to say I hadn’t memorized your number. I could find it out, but I thought it would be nice to send you a letter—it’s always nice to receive something in the mail that isn’t a bill.

Take care, Zo Zo.

I love you,

I’ll see you soon.

CHAPTER30

ZOE

Zoe reached for the chair all but falling into it. She gasped in a ragged breath as she dropped the letter onto the table, burying her face in her hands. Sobs wracked her body.

What happened to you, Lana?

When she had no more tears to cry, she picked up the letter again. Her first thought might’ve been that this was some cruel joke by Lana’s killer, but there was information in there that he couldn’t have known. And only Lana had called Zoe “Zo Zo.”

There was no date on the letter. She picked up the envelope and noticed the stamp; it had been posted from Redwater a few weeks after Lana went missing. It had been sent to Zoe’s St. Louis address and then forwarded here.

Why had it only been delivered today?

Why had it arrived the very day that Zoe herself had walked that same hike?

She looked up to the ceiling. This couldn’t be a coincidence.

God, what are you doing?

She read it again.

Peter. That was the same name Camilla had given, except this time they had the connection. He was a doctor at the hospital.

Mitch needed to know.

Zoe grabbed her phone and dialed his number.

When he didn’t answer, she called him again.

When he still didn’t answer, she called a third time.

When he yet again didn’t answer, she began pacing. She didn’t call him a fourth time—she didn’t want to give him a heart attack. But, by the sound of his tone when he did call her back, she’d almost succeeded.

“Zoe, what’s wrong?” he asked, continuing before she could answer. “I’m on my way!”

“Wait! Wait! It’s okay, it’s not an emergency,” she said, slightly embarrassed.

“What?” he asked, confused.
