Zoe frowned, but Mitch nodded.

When Dr. Roberts left, Mitch said, “Ready?”

Zoe looked toward the door. “I’m still waiting for the nurse.”

A sly smile spread across his lips. “I am your nurse. Well, not really; a nurse is going to come to your house a few times a day to help with showering, or whatever else you need. But otherwise, you’re stuck with me for a few days.”

Zoe didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “I can’t ask you to do that.”

“You didn’t ask. I want to. Come on, let’s make a run for it,” he said, extending his hand.

She took it and he helped her off the bed. He picked up her bag and walked her ever so slowly through the hospital. Thankfully, the ward was right near a side entrance, so they didn’t need to walk far.

Mitch helped her into the car and she lowered the window, tilting her face up to the afternoon sun. “By the way, thank you for the Bible. It’s beautiful; I love it,” she said, smiling.

Mitch smiled. “I’m glad you like it.”

“Love it,” she corrected him.

“So, is Peter talking yet?” Zoe asked as soon as they drove away from the hospital. Mitch had banned all talk of Peter and Jonathan until she’d rested and left the hospital, and now she could clearly see it in the rearview mirror.

Mitch chuckled. “I owe Jackson fifty dollars.”

“What?” Zoe asked, her eyebrows weaving together.

He waved his hand dismissively. “I’ll explain later, but no, Peter isn’t talking. He won’t say a word.”

“Interesting,” Zoe said, thinking that through. “What is his lawyer saying?”

Mitch shook his head. “He’s refusing a lawyer.”

She frowned. “So what does he want?”

Mitch chewed on his cheek then stole a sideways glance at her. He sighed. “He wants to talk to you. Only you.”

Zoe’s jaw fell open. “You said yes, right?”

“I’ve said nothing,” Mitch said. He sighed heavily. “Zoe, please think about this. He’s going to play games. The things he might say...” His voice trailed off.

She was a psychologist; she was well aware of the things he might say. Regardless, she wanted to sit across from him. She wanted answers.

“I want to do it,” she said without pause.

CHAPTER43

ZOE

She internally winced as she sat on the hard chair in the interrogation room, but she refused to show it. Mitch eyed her carefully.

“An officer will be in the corner behind you,” Mitch said. “He’s cuffed, obviously, but if you want an exit at any time, place your palm on the table and tap it three times. You don’t have to do this, Zoe—you can change your mind.”

“I want to do this,” she said, resolutely.

“Okay. He’s on his way,” Mitch said before leaving the interrogation room.

Her heart raced in her chest and she fought to keep her breathing even. It was almost impossible not to go back to that night, but she had to be strong and keep a level head. If there were other victims, they needed to find them so they could be returned to their loved ones.

She used the last minutes she had alone to think through her strategy.
