His gaze swept over the minimalistic yard once more before he went inside, locking the door behind him.

He drew a long breath, seriously wondering if he was losing his mind.

Get it together.

He returned to his computer, surprised to see the preview of a file. He frowned, not remembering clicking on it, but he must have done so accidentally while distracted by the possible intruder.

It took him a moment to realize that the file he’d highlighted contained the emails he’d recovered from Eden’s secret email address.

His hands trembled as he clicked on the document, opening it. He didn’t know why he was doing this to himself. He knew their contents; reading them once had broken his heart and he didn’t know if he could survive another round.

But he couldn’t stop himself.

I can’t do this anymore. He knows, or at least he knows something is going on, I’m sure of it.

This has to stop. It all has to stop. I’m his wife and I’m betraying him every day—every time I’m with you.

I wish I could talk to you in person, but I can’t risk it. He sees everything and he’ll know.

I’m so sorry, J.

Eden

Lachlan thought it was impossible to break a broken heart, but it seemed it could continue to break into tiny pieces, over and over again.

He’d questioned those initials before, but he’d ruled out the possibility of it being Jim O’Connor because he was Eden’s brother-in-law. And Eden and Diana were so close, it was impossible for him to fathom it had been Jim.

Now he questioned how well he’d known those closest to him.

His eyes stung with hot tears.

Lachlan had loved her more than he’d ever loved anyone. She had been his family. When life was hard, when he saw death and evil all day, she was the person he could come home to—his reassurance there was still good in this world.

He loaded the next email, working backward from the most recent to the oldest. It was like his mind wanted to keep sticking daggers in his heart. Despite his pleading heart, he opened the copy of the email.

J,

Are you okay? I haven’t stopped thinking about you all day. Please call me, I need to hear your voice.

Eden

The lump in his throat filled with glass. He swallowed it, wincing as he did.
