“I don’t know if the agent realizes his late brother was buying from your guy. If he doesn’t, he will soon, and you can bet your life he’s going to double-down on his efforts. My suggestion: eliminate him before he takes you down,” Ryley said without a hint of remorse.

Anna swallowed, the hairs on the back of her neck standing up. “Eliminate a federal agent? Are you serious? Then they’ll never stop hunting Diaz,” she said, keeping her voice neutral.

Ryley’s eyes met hers. “If he’s not eliminated now, everything Diaz has built could be destroyed.”

Anna frowned, looking to Diaz. “They’ve targeted you before and you didn’t just start eliminating the agents working the case. What’s so different about this?” Anna asked, her attention turned to Diaz, who had yet to say a word.

But Diaz didn’t answer Anna—he looked to Ryley instead.

“Do they know about Olivia?”

Anna’s world stopped.

Her heart felt like it skipped a beat, and then another. She fought to keep her face impassive but she had no idea what was written all over it. She didn’t know if they were even talking aboutherOlivia, but Anna’s gut screamed they were.

Ryley looked at him a long minute. “I don’t know, but if they don’t already, they will soon.”

“Who is Olivia?” Anna asked as innocently as possible, but she heard the strangeness in her voice. It didn’t sound like it had come from her own mouth.

Ryley and Diaz continued looking at each other for a long minute.

“Olivia was a traitor. Let’s go,” Diaz said as he turned to leave without a second look at her.

She looked to Ryley, who shook his head. There was no apology in his eyes, but a warning. He turned to leave and she watched him walk down the paved path that wrapped around a large boulder before he disappeared from view.

She looked over her shoulder but Diaz was already out of sight.

Anna needed to look at the profile in the envelope and memorize it before she gave it to Diaz.

But the fact that Diaz hadn’t already asked for it confirmed he was testing her. Diaz would’ve tested Alex in a similar way.

Alex had failed, but she would not.

She needed to keep her cool. Keep her mind straight. She needed to remain patient and wait for opportunities to present themselves.

She ran a hand through her hair. Anna White had long, beautiful hair worthy of a marketing campaign for a hair-care company. She missed her short bob—but that had belonged to Anna King.

When she returned to being Anna King, she’d cut her hair again.

Yet, as she took a resigned step in the direction Diaz had gone—back to the car—she wondered if she’d ever return to Anna King. Maybe Anna King was dead and she simply refused to believe it.

Would she even know Anna King when this was over?

She’d been playing Anna White for so long now.

Jackson’s words whispered in her mind like a gentle breeze.

I think we can help each other. It seems we have a common interest.

But Anna knew better than to trust anyone. She kept walking to the car.

Nothing needed to change.

All she had to do was remain patient.

Vigilant.

Watchful.
