“I’m heading off,” she said with a nod.

“I’ll see you tomorrow?” he asked.

“You will,” she said, giving him a smile.

Diaz had always envied their relationship. He felt like Damon was the only person Anna never held back from, but he’d never been able to put his finger on it. He’d spent thousands investigating any past links between them, but the only connection he’d been able to find was Becky and working at this bar.

Anna looked toward Diaz, her eyes hard. She was angry, and in part he understood. She was insulted that he’d questioned her, but she had to understand where he was coming from.

Anyway, Anna would forgive him in a few days.

“I’ll see you in the morning,” she said, stopping in front of him.

“Don’t be like that, Anna,” he said, reaching for her waist, drawing her in. “I’m sorry. I’m under a lot of pressure right now.”

“Well, don’t take it out on me,” she said, taking a step back.

His lips wanted to curl up. This was the thing he loved about Anna—she didn’t take any crap from anyone. Not even him.

He thought again of the turquoise box locked in his safe. He wasn’t sure why he’d waited all these years. In fact, he’d never intended to marry her or anyone else. But he felt like the timing was right now. He was going to spend the rest of his life with her anyway, and it might also cement her loyalty to him.

“I’ve already apologized,” he said.

She raised an eyebrow. “And it was so heartfelt. I’m tired, I’m going home.”

“Okay. I’ll see you tomorrow,” he said, but he’d have eyes on her all night.

He watched the sway of her hips in her tight jeans. She didn’t dress like any of the other girls who hung out with his boys. Anna was all class: jeans, blazers, expensive designer sneakers. Anna didn’t change for anyone; she liked who she was and she didn’t care what anyone thought of her. He loved that about her.

Diaz took a mouthful of his drink.

Maybe he was acting irrationally.

But maybe not.

If he had another rat in his circle, he was going to draw them out and put them through a kind of hell they’d never witnessed.

Everyone thought he’d made a show of it with Alex.

But he’d only been warming up.

ANNA

She checked her rearview mirrors yet again, but couldn’t see a tail. She was still rattled from everything that had happened in Damon’s office, and the memory card was burning a hole in her pocket.

Stay calm, Anna.

She tried to tell herself that she was overreacting, but she couldn’t quite bring herself to believe it.

She checked her mirrors again.

No tail.

She blew out a shaky breath as she turned the music up—there was nothing like a good song on repeat to put her in a better mood. She lowered her foot on the accelerator. If they were following her, she was about to lose them.

She pulled up in her garage, closed the automatic door before she unlocked her car door, and got out. Miss Casino was purring at the door, and for a moment all seemed well. Normal.

She turned off her house alarm and went straight to the kitchen to make a cup of tea. Some turned to liquor to settle their nerves—Anna turned to tea.
