If she could knock him out, she might be able to use her foot to pick up a weapon. It was like praying for a miracle, she supposed, but if there was ever a good time to try it, this was it.

She braced herself, angling her body as much as the rope would allow.

Don’t knock yourself out, she told herself—but before she could move, she heard him gasp and sputter behind her.

Anna’s heart skipped a beat as a hand pressed against her mouth.

“It’s me,” he said, not giving her his name.

But she didn’t need it.

His voice soothed her soul like only Jackson’s could.

“This is not how our story ends,” he said, his voice a whisper in her ear as the ropes holding her fell to her feet. He took her hand, holding it tight. “I know you’re hurting, but I need you to fight. If I say run, you run and don’t stop. I will find you, I promise.”

“I will,” she said, squeezing his hand back.

“Let’s get out of here,” he said.

JACKSON

“We’ve lost sight of Target Two. Target One is heading for the east exit. Jackson, go to the south exit—I’ll back you up.”

Dominic was their first target, and Diaz their second.

Jackson didn’t like the update he received through his earpiece, but he didn’t have time to worry about it right now. He needed to get Anna out of the warehouse and into the hands of the medics, and then come back and clean up this mess.

“Keep the lights off,” Jackson said. He wanted as much chaos as possible so they could get out unseen.

Jackson and his team had night-vision gear on, which gave them a tactical advantage over Diaz’s guys, and he needed to make the most of that opportunity for as long as possible. He wrapped an arm around her waist to guide her, because unlike him, she couldn’t see her own feet.

“Moving now,” Jackson said as he ran forward, guiding Anna.

They moved quickly, weaving through the equipment, ignoring the gunfire echoing through the air like a war song.

A figure stepped out in front of them and Jackson fired two bullets.

“Jump!” he said, not stopping. Jackson tightened his grip on her waist, lifting her over the fallen man as she jumped.

They kept moving, but suddenly they were no longer in the dark.

The lights beamed over them.

“Keep running!” Jackson said. He had no idea why they’d lost control of the lights, and he assumed that no one else did either, given there was no communication through his earpiece.

Jackson’s gaze swept over the warehouse. His eyes paused on a blood-splattered wall, and then the man in full tactical gear slumped on the ground—one of his men.

Jackson closed his eyes ever so briefly, but he couldn’t afford to get distracted now. That man had given his life for this mission, and Jackson needed to make it worth it.

He saw the exit door ahead and ran faster.

Anna was fading, as he knew she would, but he kept her upright.

“We’re almost there!” he said and she lifted her head.

As they approached, Diaz stepped in front of them, a bullet aimed at Anna’s chest.

“Stop, or I’ll kill her!”
