“Idk.”

“Do you think I’m crazy? Did you see me? I’ve been here at Royal Road all day.”

“What did you get up to last night.”

“I went to Church,” I typed, not explaining that I wasn’t talking about a house of god.

“Beau took me this morning. We still on for Monday night?”

“What time?”

“8 okay?”

“Of course. C U then.”

Chapter 16

Kingpin

Monday night rolled around and while I made sure the big house was perfect for Maddie’s arrival, I got a call.

Sky whispered into the phone. “Hey. You’re supposed to be here before Ralph whores me out, remember. You’re supposed to rescue me.”

Fuck. I’d forgotten. “Rescue you? I’m the villain, love.”

“You know what I mean. I’ll call my mom.”

Checking my watch, I saw I had time. It was five p.m. and Maddie said she’d be over here around eight. Sweet tea dropped off the ingredients for me to cook her a simple dinner. Her favorite dinner. I figured why not. My kitchen was barely ever used. Growing up without my mom, I knew how to whip up some food.

We’d eat and enjoy everything the big house had to offer, like the hot tub. There was a full bar by the pool. After a night alone, I’d take Maddie to bed. I was sure I wouldn’t even have to fight my brother after Maddie and I made love.

Since the whole crew thought I’d be staying in with my girl, I didn’t let my Enforcers, Goliath or Leviathan know I was leaving. Of course, Cricket saw me at the gate, but it wasn’t his job to make sure I stayed safe or tell me what to do.

There was something freeing about leaving Royal Road without someone tailing me. I rode a bit more recklessly than usual all the way to Shakey’s. The fear I’d heard in Sky’s voice egged me on.

I arrived at the competition if you could call it that. A strip club only, Shakey’s had a bar and a lone pool table, but there wasn’t gambling or a live band like at Royal Road. They weren’t located on Lower Broad where the other action in Nashville was. Shakey’s was off the interstate like a trashy prostitute on the corner. They didn’t have all the other stuff we used to either. Like the arena. And fuck, I needed to get the basement open again. Sadist died and didn’t leave me anyone to run our BDMS space. But Shakey’s did serve milkshakes like the name suggested. I had a hankering for a chocolate mint one.

They tried to get me to check my piece at the door.

“If you don’t hand it over, I’ll have to take it,” the young guy who played bouncer said, taking his wand over me for a second time.

“I’d like to see you try.”

The metal detector beeped over my crotch. Sometimes my jewelry caused them to go off.

“I have a pistol strapped to my balls, too,” I told the kid.

Ralph walked over.

“Josh. Let the man through.” Ralph gestured to my back. “You see this logo, you don’t disarm. Sorry, man, kid’s new. Turnover, amiright?” He greeted me. “Kingpin, man. It’s an honor.” He was so needy when he shook my hand, I about let him kiss my ring. Being in the mob, he was probably used to kissing rings and ass. “What can I do for you? How many can we expect?”

“The whole crew’s behind me,” I lied. “I rode on ahead. Want to check out your dancers. Maybe make some trades.” I rubbed my hands together.

“Just made a deal with Opry about one girl. Y’all keep poaching my girls, you’re going to have to put me on the payroll.”

I put my arm around him. Mobsters liked that sort of thing, hugs and shit. Kisses on the cheek. Gay motherfuckers if you asked me. “Ralph, that’s an idea. Now, show me your girls. I’m fixin’ to have a shake, shake.” That’s what they called a milkshake and a private room with one girl.

“You’re usually a shake, shake, shake kinda guy.” Ralph remembered my usual order.
