“Kingpin’s still gone tonight.”

“Yeah, I heard. No one knows where.”

I turned around on the stool so no one would hear us.

Leo followed my lead.

“He’s still looking for Eve. Wait, she doesn’t have a nickname.”

“Yes, she does. Pipes. Because she sings, but also, the men have jokes. What they’d like to do to those pipes.”

“Kingpin always calls her Eve.”

“That’s because they’re close. A little too close if you ask me.”

“What do you mean? I know he helped her get over her jitters or whatever.”

Leo snapped her fingers. “That’s what I mean.” Her hand landed on my shoulder. “Nothing. I don’t mean anything.”

“What do you mean Leo?” I almost growled.

She cocked her head. “I shouldn’t have said. Like I said, the bikers have raunchy jokes is all. They like to say Kingpin has an eye for every woman in this place, but I know it’s not true.”

“You sure you don’t have something to tell me, cuz?”

“I’m sure. Can’t be true. Your biker has never made a pass at me. Besides, sis. He’s not stuffing Eve’s beaver. No matter what anyone says. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said a word. The Prez just married you. Did he tell you where he was going?”

“No, I found this note outside. He read it before he left.”

Taking it from my pocket, I pushed it into her hands.

Burnt around the edges, only the words, “Come alone” and “Eve” remained.

Paisley noticed and stuck her nose over the counter.

“What you got there?”

“Nothing.”

I took the note and crumbled it in my hand.

“Don’t worry about Kingpin, darling. Nothing’s going to happen to him,” Paisley said, wiping the counter.

“How do you know?”

“I was there when Eve wrote that note.” She stuck out her chin like she was proud of herself.

“Eve?” Leonora asked just what I was thinking.

Paisley leaned in close again.

“You didn’t hear it from me, but that girl left Hallow at the altar. Can you believe she up and ran off, left that hunk of a biker lonely? Caused a heap of a commotion for the rest of us.”

That was exactly what everyone said Paisley had been saying. However, in the very next instance Kingpin walked in with Eve under his arm, and I was elated. Some of the members cheered. Our eyes met for a moment. He gave me a lopsided smile. My biker was back in one piece. Thank goodness. And the girl had been found.

And the best part, soon we’d pick up where we left off.

Kingpin promised me a week in bed, uninterrupted, but I’d settle for one night at this point. He quickly swept Eve through the casino to his office in the back without even a word to me. Pangs of jealousy hit hard. Knowing he left over a note Eve sent him herself hurt the most of all. Regardless, I tried to ignore the feeling. I’d let that note, Leo, and Paisley get in my head. However, when my husband rushed back through the bar and was going to leave without talking to me, jealousy returned full force.
