“Shacked up with one of your officers.”
“Who?”
“That’s her business. Maybe she’ll marry him.”
Leaning back, I put my boots on the corner of the desk. “Good for her.”
“Can we be serious?”
“Memphis, honestly, I just want to go crawl in bed with my Ol’ Lady.”
“She’s pregnant, isn’t she?”
Fuck. The walls had ears.
Before I could ask, Memphis said, “Her loud-mouthed friend, Leonardo.”
“I believe it’s Leonora.”
“Is that why you married her because...”
“What, because what?”
She lifted a shoulder. “Thought you said you couldn’t have kids.”
“Haven’t knocked anyone up yet. Until now.”
“Well, maybe. I mean. I’ve had scares. I’ve had, you know...”
“What?”
“Abortions.”
I scowled. What was she getting at?
“Don’t look at me like that, Beau. My body, my choice. I never wanted kids. I’m nothing but a club whore because of my love for you. I’ve been careful. I’ve been on every type of birth control invented. What have you done? You’re out there raw doggin’ women all the time if they seem clean enough to you.”
“I always wore a condom with you.”
“Broke plenty of them too. I went to the ER that one time to get one out of me, remember?”
“And why the fuck does this matter? You never said a damn word to me about getting pregnant until now. And I’ve never been your only man.”
“I didn’t think the baby could ever be yours. You always said you couldn’t have them. That you were sterile. I fucking believed you.”
“When? What are you trying to tell me?” I hollered.
“I’m not the only woman you’ve been with around here who’s had scares. Junebug lives off that morning after pill. And I could name ten women who have babies they ain’t sure who the daddy is.”
“No one’s beating down my door.”
“Yeah, because I told them all for years, you were shooting blanks.”
“Well, I’m not sure that I’m not sterile.”
“Oh, you don’t fucking know? All these years you’ve told us like it was the god’s honest truth. A medical diagnosis.”
“You know I don’t go to the doctor if I can help it. But I might be sterile.”
