“Do I have a choice?” I joked.
“Yeah, actually. I made a deal about that. I must let you leave if you want. And your mom is serious about killing me if I don’t give you one, too. She said if I ever treated you like shit again, she’d kill me herself.”
“You did treat me like shit. How does she even know?”
“We’ve had a long time to talk. Neither one of us would leave your side. I told her how I pushed you away. How I regret it.”
“She’s okay with us?”
“No. Hell no. But she’s trying. She’s excited to be a grandmother. Even if she feels too young for it. Even if she’s seeing Bubba again.”
“She is?” I was surprised about Bubba. “Even if it’s not your baby.”
“She’d be thrilled if it wasn’t mine. She’s not the only one. I mean, Sky, I wouldn’t be thrilled if the baby wasn’t mine, but it doesn’t matter to me. I’m fine either way. But your mom doesn’t know about the mob shit.”
“What will we do about that?”
“We’ll cross that road when we come to it.”
Kingpin pulled back to grab my water, and I noticed his hair was gone.
“What happened?”
He touched his buzz cut.
“Oh, it was hard to deal with in here. I shaved it off.”
“Shaved it?” If so, it had grown back a lot.
Then my hand shot up to my head.
“My hair?” It was as short as his, a buzz cut.
“They had to take it. You needed stitches almost everywhere. So, I shaved too,” he explained.
“You shaved it because of me?”
“No. For you.”
Blinking my eyes, I tried to not be upset about my hair.
He stroked my stomach, and I jumped. I seemed to have cuts everywhere. I was showing a little. When I left Royal Road, I hadn’t been. But when I’d awakened in the hospital I had been. It hadn’t been all that long, but the timing worked out that way.
Kingpin kissed my stomach, gingerly.
“I do have some news for you. When you were out, they did a million ultrasounds.”
I rolled my eyes. “You didn’t learn the sex without me?”
“We told them we didn’t want to know without you, but your mom and I saw a penis plain as day.”
“A boy?”
“Maybe a girl, too.”
I didn’t get it. Was he talking about trans rights? “I didn’t know you were an ally.”
“What? You’re having two babies.” He looked as proud as a peacock.
