“It would kill you, Josh.”

He pulled back, “Would it? Would it really? With all the blood that I feed you, do you honestly think that your blood wouldn’t recognize the source?”

“We don’t know that, and I’m not willing to take the chance.” I said to him, but part of me wanted to. That dark part of me that wanted to feel someone deep in my throat, pulling at my life force. That part wanted it something fiercely.

He stared at me one second longer and then he struck. The feel of his fangs sliding into my throat put me on an instant high and I held his head to me as he drew from my vein—knowing at the same time how wrong it was. My body shook with the second pull and then he was pulling out, backing away from me.

Fear took over the high as I studied his face. He shouldn’t have done that. “Josh!” I cried out as he winced and stumbled back. “Josh!”

I caught him before he hit the floor, and he curled in on his side holding his stomach as he groaned.

“Lena! I need help!”I shouted to my sister mentally and two seconds later, her and Cameron were in my room.

“What the hell?” Cameron yelled.

“Oh, shit! Did he drink from you?” Lena asked.

“He did, he said that with as much blood as I take from him, my blood should know that it’s his and it shouldn’t hurt him. I didn’t get to tell him that it was a bad idea to even try it! He was at my throat before I could do anything.”

The door opened again, and Ryker and Jett rushed in as Cam spoke, “Help me get him out of here and back to his place. Call the doc up here, let’s see if there is anything we can do.”

I watched as they carried him out, and Angelina came to my side. She licked at my neck to close the holes that were still open, and I winced.

“How did it feel?” She asked softly, a wistful look in her eye.

I sighed, “It felt amazing—utterly amazing.”

Chapter 11 – Joshua

Ihad worked for Alexanderfor over sixty years, had been at his side more and more as the years went on, especially after the incident with the human-turned forty years ago.

I would have done anything for Alex, and even more for his mate, Kristin. While many of us cared about her, I felt more. Deep within my heart I felt love for her—had loved her practically since the day that I had met her. My feelings had only grown stronger since the day that Alex died, and she had pretty much became my soul focus.

I had been with Alex, although not at his side—a mistake I shall forever live with. Alexander had been attending a meeting, and I’d stopped to speak with someone about a trivial matter as Alex proceeded into the building. We were separated for two minutes—one minute and fifty-nine seconds too long. With me not at his side, rebels had picked up on his exact location immediately, and had jumped in.

A bullet had been put into his left shoulder and his right leg to slow him down. Not the regular type of bullet that the humans used, but a special titanium and lead mixture that was lethal to us. Alex had gone down enough that they were able to overpower him, and the three other men with us had been shot in the heads and then staked. For some odd reason they took me as a hostage as well, although I hadn’t been shot. In fact, I had given myself up, but I knew that one wrong move and I would have been killed like the other men around me.

I wasn’t afraid to die, but my only hope in saving Alex was being taken hostage with him. My job was now to stay alive and find a way to get Alex out of this mess. As we were shoved from the van we’d be transported in, my thoughts had gone to Kristin. She would be feeling her mates’ pain as if it were her own—the downfall to a mating bond. What was she thinking? Feeling?

Alex and I had been chained down, again with the special metal combination that removed our strength and caused us literal agony. Even with two bullets in him, Alex had kept his head up, his eyes constantly on the move to everything around him.

An older man stepped out of the shadows, and his evil laugh echoed through the warehouse where they had brought us. Brought a lot of people by the smell of the blood stained on the concrete at our knees.

He clapped, his gaze trained on Alex as he grinned maliciously, “Finally, I knew this day would come.”
