She laughed, “I know, but for now, he makes me happy.”

“Is that why you went to him tonight?”

Kristin laughed harder as she stood, “No, I went to him tonight because I had nowhere else to go. I was able to recall his address from the report they did on him, and that was the only place I could think of to go.” She went to the bar and picked up a glass that was sitting there already filled. “I was serious about things needing to change. I need to get out. I can’t stand sitting in this building any longer.”

“You know that the elders will never go for it. They might want you to mate, but they know how important you are to them. I have to agree with them—as much as I hate that—but you are too important to be running around the city.”

“See, I don’t think so.” I started to open my mouth and she put her hand up to stop me, “The way I see it, our breed needs to know that I’m there. I can’t keep hiding here while Portage is out there pulling our society over to his side. If our people see me, see that I’m not afraid, then I think they might stand behind me more. I think they need to see me in the public, mixing with the humans, living life. I believe it would be good for them, and for us.”

“Maybe, or maybe it will just bring the lepers to us.”

“That was another thought that I had. What if it does? Maybe it will finally get us face to face with Portage. I want nothing more than to tear his throat out for what he did to Alex, for what he has continued to do. You are aware that it was because of him that our existence even became known to the humans, right?”

“Yes, I figured as much.”

“Well, if I’m out there, maybe it will bring him out. Maybe they will try to come for me, and we can finally figure out where the son of a bitch is hiding.”

“I still think it’s too dangerous.”

“Come on, Lena, you know that all I have to do is compel someone to forget they saw me, and if worse comes to worse, I can compel them to take my blood. Wham, they are dead.” She grew thoughtful, “Maybe that is a good message to send to Portage.”

“Too bad our blood wouldn’t killhim. It would be nice to pour it down his throat and watch him writhe in agony.”

She chuckled, “Yes, it would, but I believe he might be too old for that. As far as I know, he’s older than Alex.”

“I still can’t believe they were brothers.”

“Yeah, well once upon a time, I couldn’t believe we were sisters.” Kristin said with a grin.

“And look how well that has turned out.”

Before she could respond, the door opened to Kristin’s apartment, and Cameron came in.

“How is he?” Kristin asked immediately.

“He’s alright. I think he’s going to pull through. If he had tried to take anymore, it might have killed him, but the doc feels that his body is trying to repair itself.”

“That’s good.” I commented.

Cameron took Kristin by the arm and pulled her to the couch, “Sit.”

“Why?”

He began to roll up his sleeve, “Because you are going to feed, right now.”

“Oh, I think that is my sign to leave.” I said quickly and began to turn away.

“No, stay Angelina. If you stay, it will keep it more professional.”

I laughed, “What, you don’t want to sleep with my sister again?”

The look in his eyes was one of pain, “No, I don’t.” He glanced at Kristin, “No offense. Please stay, Angelina.”

Kristin snickered, “None taken.”

“Fine,” I rolled my eyes and went to the bar. If I was going to have to watch this, I needed a drink. I was well aware that Kristin and Cameron had been together before, and that she had fed from him, but it didn’t sit well with me—it never had.

I couldn’t believe that even after all this time, almost thirty years, I still had residual feelings for the man. It made me wonder if he felt anything for me. The temptation was there to slip into his mind, but I refused to allow myself to do that. What Cameron felt, or didn’t feel, no longer matter to me. It stopped mattering to me when he went through his string of vampirettes and ended up knocking Rosa up and breaking our bond.
