“The rest of you I will speak with later.” Kristin replied and turned, taking Hugh’s hand and walking out of the room. Conner and Ryker hurried out the door behind her.

The minute they were all gone, the room erupted in excited chatter. Some talking about how incredible it was that another reborn existed. Others discussing what it could possibly mean, and a few questioning the future mating. Josh and Rex were in on that one and I frowned at them both as I joined their little circle.

“I suggest you two both get onboard with this. You know you will not change her mind, and going against her right now, will only piss her off. This is going to be good for our breed, and it’s going to be good for her. That is all that matters.”

I turned and walked out with my head held high. She was all that mattered, but I sure as hell wish she weren’t.

Kristin was in the front lobby saying goodbye to Hugh. She stepped forward and kissed him tenderly and I fought not to frown. He glanced my way and winked before he walked out the front door with Conner and Ryker.

I approached my sister, “Did you compel him to do it?”

“No, he made that decision all on his own.” The two of us began to walk back to the elevator. “We talked for a long time and he admitted that he didn’t want to die. He wants to be a liaison between our two societies.”

“I might have been the one to give him that suggestion.” I said.

“And it’s a good one, once I know I can trust him. He needs to understand that not all of our abilities should be common knowledge, especially mine.”

“What do you think he’ll be able to do?” We stepped into the elevator. “I mean, do you think he’ll have any special abilities?”

“I don’t know, and right now, I don’t really care. He lends me enough power that it makes me quite formidable.”

“That it does.” I replied. “When is he going to do it?”

“Next weekend. He wants to wrap somethings up at work. He told me he was going to put himself on a leave of absence while this all happens. Once it’s done, he’ll see how things are, and decide what to do with his job.”

“I guess that’s a good idea,” the elevator arrived at our floor, and we stepped out to find Rex glaring at Kristin outside her door.

“Well, I think I will let you handlethat.” I said and she put her hand on my arm.

“I think you should stay with us,” She spoke aloud and then continued into my mind,“So I don’t throttle my first born.”

“What has gotten into you?” Rex snapped at her.

“Me? What the hell has gotten into you?” She retorted toward him.

“I’m trying to protect our way of life, and you’re going to let some guy from the government right into our world. Are you crazy?”

Kristin brushed past him and into her apartment. “I am far from crazy, Rex. Yes, he might work for the government right now, but he will be working for me, forusvery soon.”

“I don’t trust the guy, Mom.”

“You don’t know the guy, Rex.”

“You are being so damn irresponsible. Dad used to call you flighty, I can see why now.”

She was in his face a second later, “You were only thirteen when your father was killed, Rex. What memories you have of that time do not mean anything.”

“Bullshit! Dad always said that Alex should have never tried to put you in charge. He knew that you would fuck everything up.”

Kristin picked her son up by the throat and put him against the wall so fast that I barely saw it. Oh, shit, she just might throttle him. “Your father had issues, Rex. He was not stable, and I will not have you bringing him into conversation. You know nothing about what happened back then.”

“I know you’re the reason he’s dead!” He shouted.

Kristin released the grip on his throat and lowered him to the floor as she did, “Rex, I was not the reason he died.” She sighed heavily and stepped away from him, hanging her head for a moment. “Rex, your father wasn’t right.”

“You’re the one that is not right.”

Kristin turned slowly toward him, “Rex, I never told you this, but your father actually killed himself.”
