“I’m bringing dinner to a friend, and yes, she’s female, and no, we are not dating. She just got out of the hospital, and I’m helping her out.”

“Yeah, okay,” she replied dryly. Of all my siblings, she seemed to understand me the best, and I wasn’t fooling her.

“Anyway,” I ignored her comment. “I suggested Italian, and she was good with that, but what kind should I bring over?”

“You’re joking, right?”

“No,” I answered.

“Let me get this right. You are having dinner with a woman, at her place, I assume, and you are bringing her Italian.”

“Yep.”

“But you didn’t bother to ask her what she wanted?”

“Nope.”

I could just imagine her shaking her head at me as she sighed. “Make a parmesan that is big enough to share, or several small pieces, along with a salad and pasta, bring both a red sauce and white sauce on the side. That way she can choose. And don’t forget the bread, although you might want to go lightly on the garlic if you really like the girl.”

“I should take that much?”

“Yep, I would. I know you can easily whip it up, and you said she just got out of the hospital, so leave the leftovers there for her to enjoy after.”

“You’re the best, Riley.”

“You know it, Hen.”

“Thanks—”

I went to say goodbye, but she cut me off. “What’s her name, and why was she in the hospital?”

“Her name is Roxanne, and she was in a car accident.”

“Aw, don’t tell me you rescued her from a terrible car accident, and it was love at first sight.”

I chuckled. “While it was not love at first sight, I did meet her that way, and I dare say, I think she’s pretty cool.”

“Pretty cool, huh?” I heard her crunch on something.

“Yeah.”

“Great, I look forward to meeting her. You gonna bring her home this weekend for Mom’s birthday?”

“I just met her yesterday.”

“So, Wes brought Char home for their first date.”

“I’m not Wes. Besides, I’m not sure how she will feel after her accident.”

“Alright, fine, but I want details and a picture of this woman.”

I started to laugh. “I’ll give you details when I see you again, as for a picture, we’ll see.”

“Okay, big brother. Good luck. I gotta run back to my classroom before my little monsters return from recess.”

“See you this weekend, Riley. Be nice to the monsters.”

She laughed softly. “If I must.”
