Once I heard the door close, I sighed a happy sigh. Yeah, my brother had brought me breakfast, and it was kind of him, but Lee had brought me breakfast, too, and that made me feel better than I had all morning. I dug into the bag and found two huge muffins, a couple pads of butter, and a large fruit cup along with a plastic fork, knife, and two napkins. Man, he had thought of everything.

As I ate, I had an idea and grabbed my laptop. Since it was his mother’s birthday, the least I could do was get her a small gift for allowing me to join the festivities.

Chapter Ten

Henley

Iwas smiling when I climbed back into the ambulance, and Brett smirked my way. “Did she like her breakfast?”

“Yeah, she did. Sorry, it took me so long; she had broken a coffee mug, and I cleaned it up for her so that she didn’t have to bend down.”

“Aw, look at you being all domestic and shit,” Brett joked as he began to drive away. “You like this girl.”

“I do. There is something about her, not sure what it is, but I do like her.” I paused. “It’s her brother that I’m not a fan of.”

“Roman Novak? He’s an ass.”

“Yeah, I know. He stopped by last night right as we were sitting down to eat and called me a dog. I’m not sure what he has against me, but there is something.”

“Screw him. He’s on a power trip right now, trying to score the sergeant position on his squad.”

“That’s funny that you should say that. Roxy actually said something about him liking the power.”

He snorted. “Dude, have you ever watched him at a scene? It’s like he thinks his shit doesn’t stink. He’s all macho and rude, like that is going to make a situation any better.”

“Well, so far, Roman and his sister are total opposites.”

“You plan on taking her out?” he asked as we started back toward the firehouse on the main road.

“I invited her to come to my parents’ house this weekend for my mom’s birthday. She said yes.”

He grinned. “You’re going to introduce her to your parents, and you guys haven’t even gone out on a date yet?”

“Well, last night could be constituted as our first date.”

He laughed. “Does she think it was?”

I frowned. “I don’t know. Maybe, or maybe she just thought of it as me being nice.”

“You know, you’re the only guy I know who buys breakfast for a woman that he hasn’t even slept with yet.”

I cracked up. “Yeah, well, that wasn’t happening last night.” I stared out the side window for a moment. “Actually, I don’t want to jump in bed with her. There is something about her, and I want to take my time and get to know her better. I don’t want us to start off like that.”

“Then it’s a good thing she just had surgery,” he joked back. We were just about to pull into the firehouse when we got dispatched to a laceration call, and it was one thing after another for the rest of the day.

It was after eight when I got home and almost nine by the time I’d showered and eaten. Seated on the couch, I pulled up my text messages and sent Roxy a text to see if she was awake.

A moment later, she replied that she was, and I hit call. As much as I enjoyed texting, I would prefer to hear her voice if I could.

“Hey, you,” she said sleepily, and the sound of her voice did funny things to my libido.

“I thought you weren’t sleeping?”

“I’m not, just snuggled up in bed watching television. I will probably go to sleep soon.”

“Okay, well, I won’t keep you long. I just wanted to find out how you were doing.”

“I’m alright. Leg hurts if I move it, but my nose is doing a little better. I can chew without it throbbing.”
