“Are you interested?”

My gaze snapped to his. “Seriously?”

“Yeah, I know you worked there before, and left, but if you want to come back, now might be a good time.”

“Yeah, but my life is kind of situated in Plattsville.”

“Okay, but didn’t you just suggest to Roxy that she should move out here and start over? If you’re living two hours away, how are you going to work on a relationship?” He paused. “Unless you don’t want one, then let me know because I would love to step into your place.”

I pointed a large chef’s knife at him. “Don’t even think about it, bro.”

He started to laugh, and then it turned into a strangled noise. “Don’t worry. I’m not up to getting involved with anyone right now. Not after what I went through. I thought she was the one, man. How could I be so wrong?”

“I’m sorry, Hunt. I know you really cared about her. Who was it that you caught her with?”

“Her fucking boss,” he seethed softly. “You all joked about her working so much with him, but I didn’t see it. Not until I stopped over at her place when I got off early, and there she was, riding him on the couch.”

“Damn, I’m sorry. That sucks. Been there, I know how it feels. I couldn’t imagine doing that to someone I cared about. Why did she accept your proposal if she was involved with her boss?”

“I don’t know. I didn’t give her a chance to explain. It took everything in me not to knock the guy’s teeth out and snatch the ring off her finger.”

“Did she give it back to you, the ring?”

“She did. Well, shedidn’t. She had a friend drop it off at the firehouse. At least her friend seemed embarrassed for her.”

“Lesson learned,” I told him.

“Yeah, don’t fall in love.”

I chuckled. “Hey, not everyone you fall in love with is going to do that. Look at Charlotte and Wes. I can’t imagine either of them cheating on the other.”

He tapped his thumb on the counter. “Yeah, and Brad and Cheryl, those two were a great couple.”

“That they were. I hope one day he finds someone who can give him half of what Cheryl gave him.”

“Exactly.” He grew quiet. “What about you? You think this is serious with Roxanne?”

I shrugged. “Too soon to tell, but I will admit that I want it to be. I’m ready to settle down and maybe start a family.”

He smirked. “You and a family, now that’s funny. I wasn’t sure you’d ever want kids.”

“Someday, I do. Will that be with Roxanne? I don’t know, but we’ll see.”

“Well, keep the position in mind, but don’t wait too long. They are actively searching for a paramedic to replace Carl. He’s staying on as long as he can, but it’s going to hurt us if we don’t find someone soon to replace him.”

“I’ll think about it, Hunt. Thanks for telling me.”

“Yeppers,” he replied, and then he climbed off the stool and disappeared from the room as my mother returned.

“Did Huntley tell you about Carl?”

“Yeah, he was just filling me in. Told me about the paramedic position too.”

She peered at me but didn’t say anything. My parents were like that. They listened and would give advice once in a while, but mostly, they waited for us to ask for it.

“I told him I would think about it. I like where I am now.”

“I know you do.” She gave me that sweet motherly smile that filled my heart and made me feel loved. “It would be nice to have you closer though.”
