“Roxy, you’re right, Young is a sadist,” Adam joked.

“Hey, now. Don’t go scaring the lady.” I unfolded the sheet. “Roxy, I’m going to put this sheet over the top of you to protect you from the glass and sparks while they take the car apart.”

Her hand instantly grabbed my arm. “Don’t leave me.”

“I won’t. I can stay right here with you.” I turned to Adam. “Tell them to get started; I’m staying here with her. Go get the gurney and get ready with the board. I want her out as soon as we can get her leg free.”

“Got it, Young.” Adam rushed away, and another face popped into the window.

“Roxanne! Are you alright?”

She tried to turn her head, and I stopped her. “Don’t move, Roxy.”

“Roman, is that you?”

“Yeah, Rox, I’m here. I was just getting off when I got the call that it was you. Is she alright, Young?”

“Yeah, she’s going to be alright,” I told him. “But we need to get her out of here now.”

“Roxy, I’ll be right here when they get you out.” He stepped back as one of the rescue team pushed him out of the way.

“Okay, here is where it gets loud, Roxy,” I told her and then covered both her and me in a sheet. Her hand was still clinging to my forearm. After I had gotten the sheet over us both, she opened her eyes again.

“You know, you already practically got to second base with me, and now here we are tangled in sheets. I think you now owe me dinner.”

And damn if that little comment didn’t hit every nerve ending in my body. If this woman wanted dinner, who was I to say no. “Sounds like a deal.”

Chapter Three

Roxanne

Had I hit my head during the accident? That was the only thing I could think of as I flirted somewhat audaciously with the man in front of me. For all I knew, he was married with kids, and here I was, telling him to take me to dinner.

The sheet was over us, and for a second, we locked eyes again. Lee took hold of my wrist, and I wondered if he was taking my pulse or trying to be a calming presence. When the pressure released on my wrist, but his hand remained there, I realized that he might just be doing both.

During the process, it was incredibly loud and rather frightening with the tools tearing my car apart. I kept my eyes closed and tried to think of happier things. Suddenly I remembered my client, and it was just as the tool grew quiet for a moment that the word slipped out of my mouth. “Shit!”

I heard a soft chuckle before the noise grew louder, and I opened my eyes to see Lee staring at me a brow lifted. I was going to shake my head since speaking wasn’t an option, but I realized I couldn’t do that with the brace on. He leaned forward, his scruffy cheek brushing against mine.

“You okay, Roxy?”

“Yeah,” I replied. Lee’s ear was now close enough that I knew he could hear me. “I just remembered that I have a client waiting.”

“I’m sure they will understand,” he replied and began to pull back. As he did, our eyes locked again, and he paused. Was it wrong to want this man to kiss me while metal was shredded around me? Just then, there was a huge cracking noise, and I grabbed his forearm, squeezing hard.

“It’s okay,” he said as he leaned forward again. “They are removing the windshield. I’m sure it just fractured. You’re safe.”

“You said your name was Lee, but they called you Young.”

“My name is Henley Young, and I go by Lee with my friends, Young at work.”

“Ah,” I murmured, and his cheek brushed mine again as he shifted. “Do you know my brother?”

“Yeah, I know Roman. Not well, but I know him.”

For a few moments, there was no way to talk, even up close like we were. The noise around us was frighteningly loud, and I clung to his arm, leaning my face against his for just a little bit more comfort.

When it grew quiet, and voices around us yelled out commands, he pulled back. “Thank you.”
