“Everything,” she replied. “I’d love to taste everything.”

I chuckled at her enthusiasm. “Okay, I’ll get you a plate, or two.”

“I can get it.” She started to get up, but I took hold of her arm.

“No, you stay here and keep that leg up. I’ll bring the food to you. It will be ready in a few minutes.”

“Alright, but will you join me?”

“Of course.”

“Okay, because I want to tell you something.”

I studied her. “About what?”

“Go get our food. I’m starving. Then I’ll tell you.”

“You drive a hard bargain.” I lifted her hand and kissed the back as she grinned at me. Once again, my chest felt tight as I left her side.

In the dining room, I began to fill a plate and did as she asked, adding a small amount of everything for her to sample.

“She’s good for you,” a deep voice said from beside me, and I peered to look at Bradley.

“You think so?”

“Yeah, I do. I haven’t seen you smile this much in years.”

“It’s easy to do when I’m with her,” I told him.

“Hunt said he told you about the position opening. You going to apply?”

I paused. “I don’t know, Brad. I like where I’m at.”

“Yeah, but if Roxy is out here, wouldn’t it be nice to be here, too?”

I snorted. “I know better than to change my job because of where a woman lives. I learned that lesson.”

He chuckled. “Yeah, I guess you did. You ever see her?”

“Once in a while, but to be honest, I try to avoid her.”

“Does Roxanne know?”

“No, that’s old news, Brad. No need to bring it up. We both have our pasts.”

“Yeah, well, I learned early on with Cheryl that pasts need to be spoken about, or they can come back to haunt you.” His voice was deeper than usual, and I wondered if it was just because he was thinking about his wife.

“When we get to that point, I’ll mention it,” I said as I put a fresh-baked roll on top of the plate.

“Make sure that you do. I like her, Hen, and I can tell you do too. Be honest right from the start.” I didn’t get a chance to reply as he walked away after slapping me lightly on the back. What the hell was that about?

I carried the plate back to the couch, and her eyes grew wide as saucers. “Oh, wow! Look at all that good food.”

“Let me get my plate, and then I’ll be back.” She nodded with her mouth already full, and I chuckled as I walked away.

When I joined her, she was already halfway through her plate. “Damn, girl. Why didn’t you tell me that you were starving? I would have gotten you something earlier.”

“I didn’t realize how hungry I was until I came down here.” She wiped her mouth. “Unlike most people, I actually get hungrier when I take pain medication. I think most people feel ill and don’t want to eat.”
