She reached out, grabbing my hand. “No, please, keep flirting. It’s been so long that I was afraid I had forgotten how.”

I chuckled. “I’m pretty sure your comments back in the car should calm that insecurity. You know how to flirt quite well, Roxy.” She looked away as if she were embarrassed, and I took hold of her hand. “And for the record, I rather enjoyed it.”

She turned her pretty eyes back to me. “Do you do that with all your patients?”

“Do what?” I asked.

“Flirt with them all? Ask them out to dinner?”

“Well, first, you are the one that said dinner.” I chuckled. “But to answer your question, no. I have never asked someone out on a date while I was assisting them.”

“After?”

“Nope. I have never been intrigued enough with any of them to want to see them again after I knew they were alright.”

“So, I’m special?”

Special? This woman was rocking my world already, and I barely knew her. “Yeah, I guess so. Let’s see how special you are after we have dinner. You might have peculiar eating habits.”

She started to laugh again. “Don’t!” she admonished me behind a groan of pain.

“I’ll try not to make you laugh until you feel better.”

“You do that.”

“So how long are you going to be here?”

“They said I could leave tomorrow.”

“Then how about I bring food to your place tomorrow evening, and we can have a quiet dinner just the two of us?”

She stared at me like I’d lost my mind. “You’re kidding, right? I mean, I know we have been joking about it, but you’d really want to have dinner with me? I’m kind of a wreck right now.”

“A few bruises and surgical tape never bothered me before, Roxanne.”

“Yes, but I look like I just got out of the ring with Mike Tyson.”

I chuckled. “No, you don’t look as bad as you might think.”

Before she could reply, I heard footsteps behind me and turned to see her brother. His brow was low as he frowned at me. “What are you doing here, Young?”

I let go of her hand and stood. “I was checking on your sister.”

He stepped around me and set a large bag on the small table. “Here’s your laptop. I couldn’t find your cellphone at the shop, but I did find it in your car. It must have slipped out of the console and in between the seats. You have to be more careful with your shit, Rox.”

She pursed her lips. “Thanks for the lecture, Roman. You’re as bad as Dad. Are you going to start lecturing me on my career choice too?”

“You know he’s not all wrong. You should do more for yourself.”

And that’s when I realized that I should probably excuse myself. “I’m going to get going. I hope you feel better, Roxanne.” I nodded to her brother. “Roman, good to see you again.”

“Yeah, take it easy.” He quickly dismissed me and turned back to his sister. “I don’t know how you thought you would be able to do this. It was a stupid idea.”

I stood in the hallway after walking out and listened to him go on about how she’d never amount to anything like their mother. Holy crap, it took everything in me not to go back in there and knock his head off.

As I slowly walked down the hallway, I took out my cellphone and pulled up a number. It rang twice before it was answered. “Hey Wes, I need a favor.”
