Chapter Nineteen

Riley

My pregnancy hormones went from zero to a hundred in a matter of one tongue swipe. Suddenly, I needed to be touched, held, loved! It had been nine weeks since I’d wanted this.

Well, that wasn’t true; there were times when I’d been with Joe, and we’d been making out, and I’d wanted a release, but it wasn’t Joe’s body that I had craved.

I had craved Ethan’s.

I was on his lap, holding his face between my hands as I kissed him as if the existence of my very soul was at stake. Ethan’s hand skimmed up my spine to my head, where he tugged my hair out of the messy bun that I’d put it up in. His hands ran through my long locks before he shifted them back down to lift my shirt off. I pulled back enough to get it over my head, and then I was right back there against him, whimpering as his hands cupped my swollen breasts. He groaned—and then there was a knock at the door.

I pulled back from Ethan, dazed as we stared at one another. Another knock sounded, and I grabbed my shirt off the couch where Ethan had dropped it and held my finger up to him as I rushed to the door. Whoever was outside was going to be taking a walk.

I yanked open the door and froze. “Joe! What are you doing here?”

“Hi, I was checking on you, sweetheart. I know today was a hard day.” He started to step forward and then paused, his eyes shifting to my shirt. He stepped back. “Did I interrupt something?”

“No, I’m just tired.”

The door that I was holding tightly yanked back, and I stumbled backward into Ethan as he asked, “Who is it,sweetheart?”

Ethan stepped to my side and glared at Joe, and I did a double take when I saw he’d taken his shirt off, and damn if his hard-on wasn’t pointing proudly right at Joe.

Joe’s eyes shifted, and his jaw tensed. “Ethan, I didn’t know you were here. I’m sorry to hear about your mother. I lost mine a few years ago. I know how hard it is.”

Ethan actually deflated slightly. “Thanks.”

Joe turned back to me. “Since you two seem busy, I’ll just go.” He started to turn, and I stepped forward and grabbed his arm.

“Joe, I’m sorry, this isn’t what it seems like.”

He looked past me, staring at Ethan for a moment, and then smiling at me. “I think it might be, but I get it. Good night, Riley.”

“Joe, wait! Can you meet me for coffee tomorrow? I will explain what is going on. You deserve an explanation.” I gnawed on my bottom lip as I pleaded with my eyes.

“Okay, I should be available around eight. I have to get the kids by ten.”

“Okay, I’ll text you in the morning.”

He didn’t say anything else as he turned and walked away. I watched him get into his car, and then after he pulled out of my driveway, I spun on Ethan.

“That was not very nice!” I hissed at him as I pushed him back into the house.

“What?”

“Don’t you what me, Ethan! That was rude. You didn’t need to do that and upset Joe.”

“Yeah, well, he should be upset. You haven’t told him that you’re carrying another man’s child.”

I pursed my lips and walked around him. “You can leave now.”

He laughed. “I’m not going anywhere tonight, Riley.”

I started cackling as I dug inside the fridge. “I’m sorry, did you just say you weren’t going anywhere? I’m pretty sure I heard you wrong because you aren’t invited to stay.”

I closed the fridge and saw him leaning against the wall beside it. “And I already decided that I’m staying tonight. We aren’t done talking.”

“Yes, we are.”
