Chapter Twenty

Ethan

Of course, I heard her trying to sneak into the kitchen. I’d been waiting for her to do something like that for an hour. What I didn’t expect was for her to start drinking the chocolate right from the bottle. And I sure as hell never expected her to come to me on her knees and put it on my throbbing dick.

Her sucking the chocolate sauce off was one of the most beautiful and erotic things I had ever seen. As I got to my knees between her legs, I felt as if I’d come home. Emotions swamped me as I carried her over, and I knew that I would never be happy again with any other woman.

Riley was my future. I just needed her to see that.

When Riley showed me the video, I was in awe. The baby was just this tiny little blob, but it was moving, and this little spot was flashing, along with thiswhoosh-whoosh-whooshsound that I knew was the heart. That was my baby, mine and Riley’s.

I leaned over her stomach. “You don’t know me yet, but I love you, little one.” I kissed her belly softly as a tear dropped to her skin and then another tear. I tried to stop, but suddenly, I remembered that my mother would never get to see this baby. Never get to see any of her grandchildren, and I began to sob.

“Ethan.” Riley pulled me up so that she could curl herself around me and held me as I cried. One memory after another came forward of my mother, and I continued to cry, sometimes so hard that I thought I would explode. All the while, Riley held me, soothing me with soft kisses on my brow and strong arms around me.

I didn’t know how long I cried, but once I stopped, she handed me several tissues and let me clean myself up. She excused herself to the bathroom, and when she came back, she slipped her pajama pants back on and climbed in bed.

I used her bathroom, and when I came back, she was lying on her side, the opposite side of the bed turned down. I slid in beside her and opened my arms to her. She came to me, resting her head on my shoulder. “I’m sorry for that.”

“Ethan, don’t apologize. You’re allowed to mourn.”

“It was like it just hit me. I mean, I’ve cried a few times, but I couldn’t hold it back. The thought of my mom never seeing her grandchild broke my heart.”

She lifted her face off my chest. “She saw that video.”

“She did?”

“Yeah.” She nodded and lay back down. “She saw it.”

“What did my mom say?”

“Well, she told me that you would be a wonderful father and that I should give you a chance. You know, she’s the reason I decided to keep the baby.”

“Wait.” I felt my entire body stiffen. “You were going to get rid of it?”

Riley sighed. “At first, it was an option.” She rested her chin on her hand on my chest. “I didn’t want to do that, but I was scared. I wasn’t sure I could have a child. I wasn’t sure I even wanted one.”

“How did my mother convince you?”

“She got sick.”

“What?”

“I was on my way to see my doctor and get it confirmed. Plus, figure out my options, but I was a little early and sitting outside trying to gather the courage to go inside. I saw your parents coming out of the oncologist. They both looked devastated, and I figured out pretty quickly that whatever news they had learned wasn’t good, and it probably had to do with your mom. I knew right then that I couldn’t do anythingbuthave this child.”

The thought of her getting rid of our baby without me knowing made me cold inside. “Yeah, well, if you start considering that again, you better call me.”

Riley chuckled. “Ethan, both our families know about this now. There is no way I could not have the baby.”

I grinned. “True.”

Riley sighed and then laid her head back on my chest as I ran my fingers over her shoulder and down her arm.

“What do you want? A boy or a girl?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know, a boy would probably be easier. My luck, I’d have a really girlie girl, and I’d lose my mind.”

I burst out a laugh. “But, man, it would be awesome to have a little mini you running around.”
