Riley didn’t say anything, just stared off in the distance and looked frustrated.

“Riley, what’s going on?”

“Nothing.”

“Something is going on. Talk to me.”

“Ethan, I don’t see how this can work. What are we supposed to do, pass the kid back and forth?”

I frowned. “Why can’t we live together and raise the baby as a family?”

“Are you going to sell your house and move in here? Because I’m not selling my house.”

“Seriously? You want to argue over where we’d live? My house is bigger. It has more room for kids.”

“Kids? Did you just say kids? As in plural?” Her voice rose, and I realized that tonight was not the right time for this conversation.

“I meant room for a kid to run around and have their friends over.”

“Ethan, what the hell do you think is going to happen between us? Do you think you are going to come home, and we are going to snuggle up in one house and live happily ever after? Have you forgotten that you took a job on the other side of the county, and you’re on call twenty-four seven?”

“No, I have not forgotten that, Riley, but have you forgotten that I told you that I was in this for the long haul, and I wanted to make this work? Did you forget that I told you that I loved you?”

“Maybe your love isn’t enough,” she said softly.

“What the hell does that mean, Riley?” I sat up, feeling extremely frustrated.

She sighed. “Nothing, look I gotta go. I’m tired. I’m going to bed.” Before I could say goodbye, she disconnected.

I tossed my phone to the bedside table and growled. “Damn her.”

I was too wound up to sit still, so I went out to the common room where a group of people were watching television and playing darts. I grabbed a beer out of the cooler we kept in there and plopped down in a seat.

“You okay?” one of the guys asked.

“Fucking pregnant women,” I muttered. “Yeah, I’m fine. She’s in one of her mood swings.”

Several of the guys laughed. One of them toasted me and wished me luck. I tossed back two beers and tried to relax but still wasn’t able to.

I went into the kitchen to find a snack, and Sam slipped up behind me and put her hand on my lower back. “I know something that could ease that stress.” She slipped around my body, putting herself between me and the counter. “What do you say?”

Having a woman’s body up against mine immediately jacked up my hormones, and my deflated erection began to come back to life.

“You look like you could use a good time.” I swallowed as the temptation to take her up on her offer echoed through my mind. “You said it yourself, you two aren’t really a couple, and she’ll never know.”

After our conversation tonight, I wasn’t sure if we’d ever be a couple. Sam began to kiss my neck and along my jaw. I clenched my hands to my sides to keep from touching her.

“What do you say, Ethan?” She came closer to my mouth, and damn if I didn’t want to take her right there and put her up on the counter to slam into. As her lips touched mine, I put my hands on her shoulders and held her in place as I stepped back. The body in front of me was not the one mine craved. The woman, while a good distraction, was not the one I loved.

“Sorry, Sam. As tempting as that is, I love Riley, and I can’t do that to her.”

She shrugged with a sigh. “Can’t blame a girl for trying one more time.” She winked and started to walk away, throwing over her shoulder, “You know where I am if you change your mind.”

My eyes landed on her ass as she left the room, and I turned away, frustrated as I hung my head. That was the right decision, but damn if I didn’t want to take that back and go after her.
