There was blood on his hands, and I grabbed them. “Hen, is he okay?”

His face went blank. “We are doing everything we can.”

“Is he going to die?” The words squeaked out of my mouth.

“I don’t know, Ry. It’s not good.”

I put my hands to my face and sobbed into them as Hunt and Hen tried to console me. This was all my fault. If he died, I would never forgive myself.

Hen kept looking over his shoulder, and I heard voices talking about Ethan being put on a chopper. People started working on the truck to stabilize it so that they could get me out of it safely, and I saw feet everywhere as I looked at the world sideways from my vantage point.

The chopper was overhead and landing in a field off to the side. They weren’t going to get me out in time for me to see him. I might never see him again, never speak to him again.

As they pulled me to a rigid board and out of the truck, I peered through slitted eyelids to watch the helicopter take off. The last words I said to him were like a knife in my own chest as they echoed through my mind.I don’t love you like that! Don’t you understand that? I can’t love you like that!
