She nodded happily. “Yes, God was watching out for you, Riley. You were unharmed. Thankfully you had your seat belt on. I can’t believe he didn’t.”

“He was angry. We were fighting. He wasn’t even looking at the road. He was looking at me when we came to that intersection.”

“Oh, Riley, I’m so sorry, but don’t blame yourself. Ethan is a cop. He knows how dangerous driving can be. That accident wasn’t your fault.”

“If I had just accepted his proposal, none of this would have happened, Dani.”

She seemed to consider her words for a moment. “Why didn’t you?”

“Because I’m stupid, and I was scared, and, oh, my god! Dani! I screwed up so badly.”

She sat on the edge of the bed. “No, you can fix it later. He loves you.”

“I told him that I didn’t love him. That was the last thing I said to him.”

“You don’t love him? How can you not love him, Riley? That man was made for you. You two are the perfect couple. Every time you look at one another, everyone can see the sparks between you. You seem to be the only one that can’t see them. Or maybe you don’t want to see them because you are scared. I get it. Damn, do I get it, but you can’t be afraid to love.”

“How can I not, Dani?”

“Because if you don’t let yourself love, then you will spend the rest of your life in one meaningless relationship after another. These last few weeks, you have been so happy talking about the baby and things you and Ethan discuss. I don’t think you even realize how much you love him. You need him in your life.”

“And if he dies? What am I supposed to do then?” I said. “I’ll be carrying around the guilt of those last words that I spoke. I was in panic mode, and I wanted him to back off. I didn’t mean it.”

“You didn’t mean it when you said you didn’t love him?”

“No.” I shook my head, and as I did, I knew I was finally being honest with myself. I did love Ethan. Holy crap, I loved the man so damn much. I knew it that morning when we’d made love; I knew it when he went to his knee in front of me, and when he removed me from Henley’s truck, and when I told him that I didn’t.

I grabbed Dani’s hand with both of mine. “Dani, I screwed up so bad. I love him. I do love him. I need Ethan! He can’t die. I have to see him and tell him that I’m sorry and that I love him.”

“When the doctor says it’s okay, then you will. Right now, you need to rest and eat, and then we will come up with a plan to get him back.”

“You’ll help me?”

She grinned. “Only if you let me use it in a book later.”

I laughed as the door opened and someone walked in with a tray of food. I responded to Dani as she set it down. “Deal!”
