“Wendy said you would understand, I guess she was wrong.” It was odd hearing him call my mom by her first name.

“What makes you think I don’t understand?” I retorted and glanced at the waitress as she set down a bowl of chips and salsa and put our drinks on the table.

“The evil eye you are giving me, for one thing.”

“Just because I don’t like it, and I don’t trust you, doesn’t mean I don’t understand the lure of an older woman.”

Stewart seemed to chew on that for a moment, along with a chip. “I’m glad to hear that because I happen to love her very much.”

“And does she feel the same?” I queried.

“I believe she does. If she didn’t, she probably wouldn’t have said yes when I asked her to marry me.”

For the second time since I had arrived, my mouth dropped open. “You’re getting married?”

“Oh, you told him!” my mother exclaimed as she returned to the table at that very moment. Stewart stood and pulled her chair back out while I looked on dumbfounded.

“Sorry, it came up in conversation.” Stewart leaned forward and placed a kiss on my mother’s lips.

I stared at the two of them, and, if I was honest with myself, I could see the love on their faces as they looked at one another. I just wasn’t ready to accept that.

For the rest of lunch, I listened to the two of them talk about their plans: a quick wedding in four weeks, a honeymoon to Barbados where he owned a home, then she would move into his condo not far from mine.

When I stood to leave, my head was spinning. “Mom, it was good to see you.”

“I know this is all a shock, Colt, but I know you and Stewart will get along great.”

I flicked a look at Stewart as we stood on the sidewalk outside the restaurant. Only time would tell.

“I’ll talk to you soon, Mom.” I kissed her cheek and shook Stewart’s hand before I walked away.

I was still in semi-shock when I approached the medical complex in which I had my office—so much so that when I turned the corner, I didn’t see the young woman before she slammed into me. I grabbed her arms to steady her and pulled her back from my chest.

The air left my lungs in a whoosh as I realized it was the woman from Shot Therapy, and she looked like she had a black eye.
