Chapter 6

Colt

The whole way up the elevator to my office, I smiled. It wasn’t until Whitney entered my office and spoke that it faltered.

“So lunch with your mom must have been good today,” she broached as she took a seat in one of my leather visitor chairs.

“Hardly,” I remarked, “my mom wanted to introduce me to her fiancé.”

“Your mom’s getting remarried? That’s great.”

I looked up at Whitney, “To a guy just a few years older than I am.”

“Oh, dang, your momma’s a cougar. I didn’t see that one coming.”

“Don’t say that.” I sank down into my chair.

“So if you’re not happy about your mom’s news, why were you grinning like you just won the lottery when I walked in your office.”

I shrugged and twisted my chair back and forth for a moment. I wasn’t sure I wanted to tell Whitney was I was doing. I knew if I did, she would try to talk me out of it, and I was pretty sure I wanted to do this.

“No reason. Can’t a guy smile for the hell of it?”

She dropped her chin and gave me a look. I knew that look. It meant: Are you kidding me?

“Stop looking at me like that.” I stood and began to straighten some papers on my desk.

“Like what? Like you’re acting like a total moron, and I know it.”

“Yeah, that look.” I winked.

“Whatever, you’ll tell me eventually, you always do.” She went to leave, “Want to grab a bite tonight? We should be done early.”

“Thanks, but no. I have plans.”

“Aha! You have a date!”

“What? No, no, I don’t have a date, but I am meeting someone for dinner to discuss something.”

“And that someone is female, right?”

“So,” I pulled on my white lab coat.

“So that’s why you were grinning like a little boy who just got an ice cream cone.”

I shook my head at her.

“Who is she?” Whitney blocked my way as I tried to leave. Was that a hint of jealousy in her voice?

“Just a friend I want to help out, Whitney.” I patted her arm and went around her.

Over the next few hours, Whitney tried to get more information out of me, but I managed to keep her in the dark. I was even able to slip out the back door without her seeing me. I hustled from the building so I could get home and shower before I went to meet Ember—Ember Greene.

Jesus, she had incredible eyes. Their blue was so clear you could get lost in them trying to plumb to their depths. When I’d walked around that corner today, the last person I’d expected to see was her. The shock of seeing her black eye had begun a slow burn in my gut to think that the guy from the other night could have done that to her, but for some reason I actually believed her story about her freak accident.

I laughed as I sat in the back of the taxi, deviant symptom. If that wasn’t the funniest damned thing I had ever heard. I was still chuckling when the taxi stopped in front of my building, and I nodded at Henry as he held the door open for me. “Doctor Barnes, how are you this evening?”

“I’m excellent, how are you?” I paused on the sidewalk to await his answer.
