“Look, I’m not like most of those guys you go out with.”

She threw her head back and laughed, “Go out with? I don’t date, Colt. I pick up a guy and have sex; that’s not dating.”

I let her hand go at her blunt statement. “Why do you do that?”

“Do what?”

“Ember, look at me for a second.” I waited until she gave me her attention, “Why do you pick up guys and just have sex?”

“What kind of a doctor are you? A shrink?” she asked suddenly.

The waitress arrived and took our order, and when she left, Ember sat back in her seat and put her hands in her lap.

“No, I’m not a psychologist. I’m a plastic surgeon.” I grinned at her.

“Oh, so you’re one of those,” she stated tartly, and I figured she was swinging her foot because her body was bouncing slightly. That wouldn’t have bothered me except the movement jiggled her breasts, and they reminded me of the hot little sparkling belly ring I’d spotted earlier.

“One of what?” I asked her, finally processing what she’d said.

“You’re a vain doctor. You fix rich people to stay beautiful.” She shrugged and wiped at the moisture on her glass.

“Well, not really. I mean, sometimes I work on rich people, but mostly I don’t.” For some reason I wasn’t ready to explain to her exactly what I did do.

“What the hell does that mean?”

“It means that I help people.” She laughed again. “What?”

“I don’t see how giving someone a nose job or a butt lift is helping someone.”

“You’d be surprised. Someday, I’ll explain it to you.” I grabbed a piece of garlic bread from the basket the waitress had left. “So are you from New York?”

“No, Maryland.” She watched me suspiciously as I took a bite of the bread.

“Why did you move to New York?”

She shrugged again, “I love the city. What about you?”

“Born and bred right here in the Big Apple. What do you love about the city?”

“Why are you asking me all these questions? You already told me you didn’t want to sleep with me, and I doubt you’re looking for any new friends. I don’t need plastic surgery, and besides I couldn’t afford that, so why are you so interested in getting to know me?”

I leaned my elbows on the table, “Because there is something about you, Ember, that fascinates me. I don’t know what it is, but I want to get to know you.”

She blinked a few times rapidly like something had surprised her. “The lights and the sounds. That’s what I love about the city. I love all the night lights and the sounds of the city as it moves through its day.”

“Well, look at that, we have something in common. I happen to love those same two things. Although the food in the city is pretty high on my list.”

“Oh, yes, can’t forget the food,” and with that, the two of us relaxed and began to talk about our favorite places to eat. She filled me in on a lot of hole-in-the-wall spots to get some of the best authentic foods, and I talked about some of the more well-known restaurants around the city. Even if I hadn’t seen the apartment building where she lived, I would have guessed she didn’t have a lot of money, but most people in the city barely got by.

By the time dinner was done, I was enjoying myself more than I had expected. Ember had a sense of humor that rivaled no one else’s. She was quick witted and wasn’t afraid to laugh out loud, she even snorted once or twice which got me laughing harder.

We decided to order tiramisu to share for dessert, and I was glad we did since it was almost as big as my dinner plate.

As Ember scooped a bite she glanced up at me, “So are you finally going to spill the real reason you wanted to meet with me?”

She slipped her spoon into her mouth and pulled it out slowly. Damn, what I wouldn’t give to be that spoon. I cleared my throat and stuck my own bite in my mouth, chewed, and swallowed.

“Okay, I told you I had a proposition for you.”
